What's Going On With Star Wars Episode IX, According to J.J. Abrams

It's a very exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. With Disney now in charge of the beloved property, there are a ton of movies being worked on for the generations of rabid fans. This past December brought Rian Johnson's subversive sequel The Last Jedi, which turned the franchise on it head. The current trilogy will be completed by J.J. Abrams, following Colin Trevorrow's departure from the project. Fans are eager to see the man who kickstarted the trilogy complete the final chapter, and now Abrams has given fans an update about Episode IX.

We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July... Having a script in advance is something I haven't always been lucky enough to have. I'm writing this with Chris Terrio who is a genius, and I'm having a great time.

This little tidbit is enough to get most self respecting fanboys giddy with the joy. Episode IX's script is already here, meaning that J.J. Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio must have had some interesting ideas to move the story forward. Now the question is: how's it all going to go down?

J.J. Abrams' update comes from his recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Colbert is a major Star Wars fan, and seems to have a great relationship with the director/producer/writer. Abrams often opens up extra thanks to Colbert's enthusiasm, resulting in the delightful information about Episode IX.

Colin Trevorrow's departure from Episode IX was initially troubling for the fandom; part of a trend where directors depart major blockbusters following creative or scheduling issues. After all, Solo lost its duel directors in Phil Lord and Chris Miller for that exact reason a few months ago. But in some ways, Abrams is perhaps the most appropriate director to complete the current trilogy of films.

After all, J.J. Abrams was tasked with all the world building associated with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He created the four new protagonists, and will therefore be able to complete their journey within the franchise. While Rian Johnson took tons of risks with The Last Jedi, Abram can focus on bringing the story to a satisfying conclusion. The stakes have never been higher, and it should be fascinating to see where Abrams ultimately takes his characters in the next sequel.

Of course, the writing does have some challenges, including how to write off Carrie Fisher's Leia Organa. Episode IX was meant to be Leia's biggest movie, only adding to the tragedy surrounding Fisher's passing. It would be a shame if the next movie didn't contain any of the original three heroes, so hopefully Luke Skywalker will be back as a Force Ghost at some point.

Episode IX will arrive December 20, 2019. But first Solo: A Star Wars Story will fly into theaters May 25, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

BB-8 Puppeteer Wraps Star Wars: Episode IX After 5-Year 'Amazing Ride'

BB-8 Puppeteer Wraps Star Wars: Episode IX After 5-Year 'Amazing Ride'

Is BB-8 saying goodbye for now or forever after Star Wars: Episode IX? It's the end of the new trilogy, but with Disney+ coming, and standalone movies hitting theaters, it's hard to imagine this is really The End.

Brian Herring is one of the puppeteers and lead performer behind BB-8. You may not think of the process that goes into creating the character, but it has been his life -- and his dream -- for the past five years. Now that many stars are wrapping their roles on Star Wars: Episode IX, Herring took a moment to thank the Lucasfilm team and look back fondly on his journey:

What a joy. Brian Herring joined the creature shop for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams returned to direct Episode IX, which has yet to reveal its title. Herring's BB-8 was also part of the saga in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson.

Brian Herring also worked on other creatures in the Star Wars galaxy, including Porgs, Fathiers, and the sea cows Luke Skywalker milked. Herring shared BB-8 puppeteer duty with Dave Chapman. And did you know Bill Hader and Ben Schwartz were both credited as "BB-8 vocal consultants" in The Force Awakens?

Brian Herring has a great interview on StarWars.com from March 2018, talking about the differences as a puppeteer going from operating a droid puppet to operating an organic creature like a Porg. He also talked about why it's important to have the practical effects puppets versus just using CGI for the movies:

Practical effects on set, I think, are so important because the actors have something to react to, but also the audience can tell if somethings not there. [...] There was a shot in The Force Awakens, where Chewbacca is on the gurney and Finn is trying to help him and BB-8 comes in. And I whizzed it in at one point and I hit a crate and I said, "Sorry, JJ! I hit the crate." He went, Hit the crate every time you come in because it shows youre there. It shows youre real and people can invest more. You do get brilliant performances, like Gollum [played by Snoke actor Andy Serkis], where you have a human performance. And all these things work best when you have a performance at the heart of them. Thats not to say that the animators arent awesome at what they do, but even if they have to go in and fix it digitally later, they have something organic and its the imperfections that make things perfect.

Good points! BB-8 is not the only droid saying his goodbyes right now. Anthony Daniels just shared his own farewell, after playing C-3PO since the very first Star Wars movie back in 1977. But it's also not clear if his goodbye was for now or forever. After all, once Return of the Jedi completed the first trilogy in 1983, no one really saw six more movies coming to the big screen with the prequels and now this new trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode IX has yet to reveal its true title or any first look footage at this point, and we're not expecting tomorrow's Super Bowl to change that. So we wait. The movie arrives in theaters on December 20, as one of the many releases of 2019.

Venoms Opening Weekend Is Poised To Break October Records

Venoms Opening Weekend Is Poised To Break October Records

Audiences just can't look away from a certain alien symbiotic creature in the first weekend of October. While the villain's friendly neighborhood comic book rival was nowhere to be found, (off in the depths of the MCU not feeling too well) as the solo origin of Venom has proved itself to be a record-breaking success story. The first installment of Sony's Spider-Verse will own the charts as the highest performing October release of all time, since it took home a $32.75 million opening on Friday, including its Thursday $10 million earnings. While early tracking projected the spin-off to earn between $55-65 million, Venom is looking at a $75 million debut weekend, surpassing 2013's Gravity, which previously held the October record with $55.7 million.

Venom was met with early mixed-to-negative reviews from critics, often calling it a throwback to Marvel's darker days with a feel much like that of Catwoman and Daredevil. CinemaBlend's review said what many feared, the film couldn't stand on its own without Spider-Man sharing some of the spotlight. Apparently, Lady Gaga fans even waged a Twitter war against Venom, by tweeting out criticisms in hopes for her proper film debut, A Star is Born to gain more theater attendance. Yet none of this could keep fans away with these record-breaking numbers, according to Box Office Mojo results.

Venom follows reporter Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), obsessed with exposing genius billionaire Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) and his unethical foundation. While digging deeper into his expos, Brock bonds with the alien symbiote, giving him incredible powers and violent desires. The film is the beginning of a planned Spider-Verse franchise helmed by Sony to include spin-offs of other Marvel characters. Some of the studios plans include films for Morbius the Living Vampire, Silver Sable, Black Cat and Silk. Since Venom is set to become a record-breaking hit at the box office, these plans will likely move forward, even without most critics behind it.

Behind Venom in earnings is A Star is Born which also debuted this weekend. The critically-acclaimed film starring Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in a retelling of an age-old Hollywood classic story only made half as much with $15.8 million on Friday. While the film has received glowing praise since it was first screened, it certainly won't compete with the curiosity and buzz surrounding Venom this weekend, as it makes a more solid mark on the box office. However, A Star is Born could very likely be winning the praise of Academy as awards season rolls around with the film's dazzling reception.

With October typically being a month for big box office earners to slow down and award season hopefuls to roll in, the placement of Venom for this weekend was certainly a smart decision for Sony and it is paying off this weekend with a huge turnout.
