Why A Groundhog Day Sequel Will Never Happen, According To One Of The Actors
In the pantheon of iconic Bill Murray movies, few can live up to the reputation of Groundhog Day. The Harold Ramis classic has long been hailed as one of the best comedies ever made, and it has left a particular segment of the fan base demanding a sequel (or even reboot) ever since it first came out back in 1993. That said, those of you out there who are demanding a sequel likely shouldn't get too excited about that possibility. According to Groundhog Day actress Andie MacDowell, that proposed sequel will never happen because Bill Murray will never do it. In a recent interview, the actress explained:
People always say 'Let's do Groundhog Day' again. First of all, Bill Murray's never going to do it so you can forget that. I know him. He's not going to do it.
There you have it, folks. People have clamored for a sequel to Groundhog Day, and they have made that demand known to Andie MacDowell for years. However, even in the face of that fan enthusiasm, she does not seem to think that we will ever see another extremely prolonged day in the life of Phil Connors, and it's all because Bill Murray won't make it a reality.
Of course, Andie MacDowell's remarks to THR naturally raise the discussion of whether or not a Groundhog Day sequel would even be a good thing in the first place. The original Groundhog Day tells a full three-act story that tracks the arc of Phil from his status as a pompous jerk at the beginning of the film to his eventual self-realization on that typically mundane holiday. Groundhog Day does not end with a cliffhanger or a promise of more adventures in this universe, so it arguably makes sense that Bill Murray does not want to return to that well.
With that said, even if we never get a proper sequel to Groundhog Day, there's still plenty of evidence to suggest that the film's DNA continues to live on in other film projects. Movies like Happy Death Day and Edge of Tomorrow (among others) have taken the Groundhog Day formula and applied it to other genres with striking efficacy. Even if Bill Murray never comes back for another installment in the property that started it all, it makes sense to assume that Groundhog Day-esque films will continue to pop up for the foreseeable future.
So, for now, it looks like we should not hold our breath on waiting for a sequel or any sort of follow-up to Groundhog Day.
