Guillermo Del Toro Totally Double-Checked The Best Picture Envelope

Last year's Best Picture envelope mix up was one of the most memorable moments in the history of the Academy Awards, and as expected, last night's ceremony couldn't help but make fun of the fiasco early and often. When it came time for the evening's final award, the Academy even brought back Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway to present. But even with all the assurances that something like the La La Land/Moonlight mix up would never happen again, you'd have to check the envelope, right? Well, just to make sure history wasn't repeating itself, director Guillermo del Toro double-checked the envelope to see that The Shape of Water was indeed the Best Picture winner, as you can see below.

Is there anyone greater than Guillermo del Toro? He takes the envelope from Warren Beatty and puts it close to his glasses just to make sure this is really happening, and then smiles and turns to the audience to affirm that his sumptuous fairy tale was truly recognized as the best film of the year. The best part of this gif, courtesy of Meredith Border's Twitter account, and likely the reason she made it, is the joyous expression on Guillermo del Toro's face. That is a look of pure happiness. The director who is best known for crafting worlds of fantasy is finally able to bask in reality, knowing that his vision is truly appreciated and that no last second mix-up will change that. Even if you wanted something else to win, you have to be happy for him seeing the gleeful look on his face. His childlike whimsy in this moment sums up everything film fans love about Guillermo del Toro and everything that the magic of the movies speaks to in all of us.

It was a good night for Guillermo del Toro and his passion project, The Shape of Water. The fairy tale about a mute woman and a fishman was nominated for 13 Oscars heading into the night and walked away with four wins. In addition to Best Picture, The Shape of Water won for Best Original Score and Best Production Design, as well as netted Guillermo del Toro his first Best Director win. This means that Guillermo del Toro joins fellow Mexican filmmakers and three amigos brethren, Alphonso Cuarn and Alejandro G. Irritu as recipients of the Academy's highest honor for directing. We know that The Shape of Water struggled against a less than ideal budget and that aspects of the production were a nightmare, so for it to receive this level of recognition has to be deeply rewarding for del Toro.

Guillermo del Toro is taking a year off from directing, but hopefully this Best Picture win brings more attention to the director's past and future work, and allows him to make more movies that live up to his legendarily creative imagination. The Terminally Ill Young Man Who Wanted To Meet An Avenger Has Died

Earlier this week, Fox News anchor Shannon Bream reached out to followers on social media in an effort to grant a dying boy's final wish. The boy simply wanted a greeting from one of the Avengers, and on Tuesday, we reported about how superheroes across the comic book movie universe spectrum went above and beyond to deliver on this wish. People like Ryan Reynolds, Chris Evans and Zachary Levi all reached out to help. Sadly, the young boy named Emilio has passed away. Shannon Bream took to social media to let everyone know the news:

It is quite tragic that the young superhero fan lost his battle with cancer, and nothing can make that better, but knowing that his final request was so overwhelmingly granted is a small, if insufficient comfort. Various heroes reached out and sent personalized messages to Emilio and his family in his final days. Sitting in a hospital room with someone who you know is going to die is an awful experience that many people have gone through or someday will. The fact that the kid and his family had some joy, some tiny reason to smile or laugh or feel slightly better, if even for a second, is invaluable and just goes to show how far a little kindness can go.

A host of cinematic superheroes showed their kindness, too. Shannon Bream cited many actors on Twitter who sent messages to Emilio before he passed, including, but not limited to, Paul Rudd, Chris Evans, Paul Bettany, Don Cheadle, Benedict Wong, Mark Ruffalo, Chloe Bennet, Zachary Levi and Clark Gregg. None of these actors had to do anything, but something as small as a short, personalized video can go a long way. The popularity of comic book movies means that o- screen superheroes are the heroes that many kids look up to, so for these actors to recognize that and fulfill that role is great.

The world of superheroes and the Avengers must have meant a lot to Emilio, but now his influence may be of help to others. The young boy wrote a book last year called The Mindless Boy, the proceeds of which go to The Genes Foundation, a non-profit founded in his name to help those going through similar struggles and their families. So even though Emilio's own life was criminally short, his legacy may prove to help others like him someday in their own battles.
