Why Marvel Movies Work Better Than DCs, According To One Comic Writer

There are certain rivalries that feel like they'll last forever. There's the Yankees and the Red Sox, Coke or Pepsi, and Marvel vs DC. The two comics book competitors have been trying to outdo the other for years, and it's now translated to their respective shared universes. But while the DC Extended Universe attempted to play catch up with big ensemble projects like Suicide Squad and Justice League, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has remained the top dog in the genre. Comic book writer Mark Millar, who has worked with both studios, seems to have a reason why.

I think it's really simple the characters aren't cinematic and I say this as a massive DC fan who much prefers their characters to Marvel's. Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman are some of my favorites but I think these characters, with the exception of Batman, they aren't based around their secret identity they are based around their super power. Whereas the Marvel characters tend to be based around the personality of Matt Murdock or Peter Parker or the individual X-Men, it's all about the character.

It looks like the heart of the matter is that Marvel's characters are simply more human and relatable. This can help audiences feel connected to the studios' movies and TV shows. Meanwhile, the DC heroes are a bit more simple and primarily focused on saving the day. That is, except Batman.

Mark Millar's comments to Yahoo Movies points to Batman as the exception to this rule. The Dark Knight's superheroics is rooted in his deep personal pain, after seeing his parents gunned down as a child. Bruce Wayne constantly struggles with letting his alter ego take over, while also holding himself to a strict moral code. Batman's internal struggles are what makes him so fascinating and beloved.

When Stan Lee was creating the various characters from Marvel comics, he placed a focus on creating flawed figures. The X-Men, while superpowered, were ostracized from the world due to their mutant abilities. Conversely, the Justice League can operate in plain sight, with the entirety of the planet thankful for their contributions.

It's because of this disconnect that Mark Millar thinks DC's character simply aren't relatable enough. He went on to say,

DC, outside of Batman, is not about the character. With Batman, you can understand him and you can worry about him but someone like Green Lantern, he has this ring that allows him to create 3D physical manifestations and green plasma with the thoughts in his head but he's allergic to the color yellow! How do you make a movie with that? In 1952 that made perfect sense but now the audience have no idea what that's all about.

He makes a fair point. If its expected to thrive, the DC Extended Universe is going to have to find ways to make its heroes vulnerable and relatable. Finding quirks and flaws will allow its comic book movies to strike a personal chord for viewers, and hopefully help the shared universe get to place that DC Studios wants it to be.

Jake Gyllenhaal Convinced Jamie Lee Curtis To Do The New Halloween

Horror fans are in for a treat later this year when Blumhouse's Halloween reboot finally hits theaters forty years after the debut of John Carpenter's original slasher flick. There's a lot of anticipation to see what director David Gordon Green can bring to the table, as he's currently riding high off of the critical acclaim enjoyed by his Boston Marathon bombing movie, Stronger, from last year. That film generated quite a bit of buzz for the filmmaker, and it turns out that Stronger star Jake Gyllenhaal actually was the one who convinced Jamie Lee Curtis to return to the Halloween franchise following his collaboration with Green.

So, it seems that Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Lee Curtis are more connected than some of us may have previously realized. The two are close family friends, and Curtis even refers to him as her "unofficial godson." Given that close relationship, Variety reports that it was the Donnie Darko star who convinced Curtis to sign on for the Halloween reboot because he had such a good time working with David Gordon Green on Stronger, even reportedly going so far as to rank it as one of the top experiences of his career.

Once Jamie Lee Curtis got a chance to meet David Gordon Green, she fell back into a nice rhythm reminiscent of the one experienced when she worked on the original Halloween. In fact, the actress has likened David Gordon Green's style to that of John Carpenter, noting his calm and relaxed approach to filmmaking. After all, this is the guy responsible for Pineapple Express, so it makes sense to know that he has a lighter side when Michael Myers isn't butchering teenagers on the spookiest night of the year.

With Jake Gyllenhaal having convinced them to work together, now it's a matter of waiting to see what David Gordon Green and Jamie Lee Curtis can do. The first trailer for the Halloween reboot dropped last week and took the internet by storm, and it looks like the reboot will honor the first film in a major way, as it sets up a dark showdown between a scrappy and capable Laurie Strode (who has been preparing for this fight) and a perpetually-enigmatic Boogeyman with an affinity for white masks and kitchen knives.

Halloween fans will get a chance to see if Jamie Lee Curtis had an experience similar to the one enjoyed by Jake Gyllenhaal on Stronger later this year when Blumhouse's Halloween debuts in theaters on October 19. Fifty Shades Freed: Rate And Discuss

We hate to break the news to you, Fifty Shades fans, but Fifty Shades Freed is, indeed, the end of the adventures of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson). After a three film courtship, the pair finally settled down in marriage, but still have a perilous finale to get through in order to live happily ever after. All of the drama, tension, and sexy adventure that the Fifty Shades trilogy has delivered thus far definitely looks to be represented in the new film, so fans of the franchise should be happy with this final entry.

That said, we have to wonder if critical evaluation will be Fifty Shades Freed's friend this time out? We're not so sure, as we've predicted the film will reach a 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after all the reviews are in and counted; and that's after a 10% showing for Fifty Shades Darker lowered the bar from the first film's 25% high water mark. Our own reviewer saw the film in advance, and had some choice words about the finale to the franchise started by 2015's Fifty Shades of Grey. In particular, our review for the film had this to say:

Fifty Shades Freed ends the franchise not with a whimper, nor a bang, but a Pinterest board of bad ideas involving storytelling, relationship advice, and general conduct.

With all of that in mind, movies aren't simply judged in a critical vacuum, as you, the fans, certainly have opinions on how you enjoyed Fifty Shades Freed. Of course, the end of a franchise comes with its stars looking back on their time in the roles that helped make them big. In the case of Jamie Dornan, he has some specific thoughts on how it feels to leave his role of Christian Grey. However, when it comes to Dakota Johnson, she seems to be more focused on why she took the part of Anastasia Grey (nee Steele) when it was offered for Fifty Shades of Grey. On a more disappointing note to some fans, and a little bit of a spoiler for Fifty Shades Freed, you don't get to see Jamie's "Dornan" in the film, and there's a good reason as to why the actor decided full frontal nudity wasn't for him.
