Butch Cassidy And Princess Bride Writer William Goldman Has Died At 87

William Goldman was probably my favorite writer in the world, though I had never met him. The prolific author and screenwriter is still part of the cultural lexicon, although some of his biggest movies came out decades ago. Tragically, this week William Goldman passed away at his home in Manhattan. He was 87 years of age at the time of his death.

News that William Goldman had died broke Friday, but the Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid Oscar winner reportedly died at his home on Thursday. His family and friends were present and his death wasn't sudden. Deadline reports he had not been well for some time and that his health had begun to fail sometime over the summer this year.

His partner Susan Burden told the NY Times that he had colon cancer and pneumonia at the time of his death.

There have been myriad screenwriters in Hollywood over the years, but not nearly as many are able to make quite the impact that William Goldman did. The man was an Oscar winner not once but twice, nabbing the coveted statue for both the aforementioned Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All The President's Men.

He possibly most famously wrote the novel The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure in 1973. More than a decade later, Rob Reiner enlisted him to write the screenplay for The Princess Bride. The movie would not go on to do big business at the box office despite positive reviews; nonetheless, it is a classic comedy over 30 years later. In 2016 that movie was inducted in the National Film Registry, joining the likes of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (joined 2003).

William Goldman would recall in a book by Richard Andersen that he had gotten more mail about The Princess Bride than any of his other projects combined, noting his fans wrote "all kinds of strange outpouring letters."

It wasn't just those projects that are fan favorites. Many of William Goldman's other screenplays are well-remembered. He penned Chaplin, the 1992 film that landed Robert Downey Jr. an Oscar nod. He also wrote the 1975 screenplay for The Stepford Wives. Beyond that, he was the talent behind Heat, Misery, Marathon Man, The Ghost and the Darkness, and Hearts in Atlantis.

In the business he was a juggernaut with a career spanning decades beginning in the 1960s. He continued working into the early 21st Century with Hearts in Atlantas (2001) and Dreamcatcher (2003).

Yet, in this moment it's The Princess Bride that is still striking and not because of the Sicilian's laughter or the R.O.U.S.' but for one small, profound quote he wrote: "Life isn't fair, it's just fairer than death, that's all."

William Goldman, you'll be missed.

Shooting Occurs After Barbershop Argument Over Who Should Play Aretha Franklin In A Movie

Shooting Occurs After Barbershop Argument Over Who Should Play Aretha Franklin In A Movie

Amid an outpouring of adoring tributes and remembrances for the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, who died at 76 on Thursday, comes news of an unusual dispute centered on the legendary singer that ended in gunfire outside a barbershop in Suffolk, Virginia. The incident took place shortly after the announcement of Franklin's passing, on Thursday morning. Witnesses said that the two men involved were arguing over whether actress Halle Berry played or would play Aretha Franklin in a biopic before things started to get physical and ended in one of the men taking out a gun. The victim is said to be considered in critical condition because of the altercation by the two men that witnesses claim were friends.

The report by Virginia Station WTKR comes as fans mourn the acclaimed gospel singer. The dispute that ended in a shooting didn't come out of thin air, as Aretha Franklin had been planning her own biopic for over 10 years, expressing her desire for Halle Berry to play her. When Berry was asked at the Golden Globes about it, she responded with "someone should tell Aretha that I can't do her justice." The actress claimed because she couldn't sing, the role wouldn't be a good fit for her. The legend maintained her interest to Wendy Williams in 2011, with Berry as her first choice, believing that she could nail the role anyway. Franklin said that she didn't expect her to sing in the film, as many actors who have played singers have lip-synced to original recordings, such as Marion Cotillard's Oscar-winning performance of French singer Edith Piaf in Le Vie en Rose.

In January 2018, powerhouse vocalist Jennifer Hudson was confirmed to take on the on-screen portrayal of the Queen of Soul after being attached to the project since 2015, with Aretha Franklin's full blessing, thus rendering any arguments in favor of Halle Berry taking the role a moot point. The upcoming biopic will be based on the singer's memoir "Aretha: From These Roots." The legend also showed her interest in the casting of Denzel Washington as her father and Terrance Howard as Smokey Robinson while the project has been in development, but no other casting news have been released.

Aretha Franklin has left a magnificent legacy behind in the entertainment industry in music, film, live television and on stage. Best known for her fierce hits such as "Respect," "I Say a Little Prayer" and "Natural Woman," the singer was the first woman to be induced into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, among her many achievements as a soul singer. It's estimated that the vocalist sold over 75 million records worldwide, since gaining traction in the '50s and '60s. Franklin passed on in her home in Detroit just days after news broke that she was gravely ill. As the widely impactful artist stays in the fond memories of fans souls, this upcoming biopic will serve as a tribute to her monumental life.

James Cameron And Sigourney Weaver Really Liked Neill Blomkamp's Alien Idea

James Cameron And Sigourney Weaver Really Liked Neill Blomkamp's Alien Idea

Before Ridley Scott went ahead with Alien: Covenant there was another potential sequel we very nearly got. It was going to be directed by District 9's Neill Blomkamp and would have been a more direct sequel to the existing franchise than the prequels being made by Scott. While it's currently looking like the movie will probably never happen, if it did, it appears that both Sigourney Weaver and Aliens director James Cameron were on board. According to Weaver...

We almost started to do it when I was working with James Cameron. But by the time we were put off by Fox, Neill had gotten so many jobs that we'd have to wait probably. I'm busy doing Avatar 4 and 5. I love working with Neill and I think he'd do a terrific job, and James Cameron really thinks it's a great idea, so you never know. Right now, I think Neill's got like three projects going at once.

Following the release of the "sort of Alien prequel" Prometheus, there was some question about where the franchise was going to go next. Ridley Scott was, at one time, interested in doing several follow-ups to Prometheus, but then an interesting dark horse entered the fray when it turned out Neill Blomkamp had an idea for his own Alien sequel. The project would have reportedly discounted the last two Alien films and would have been a direct sequel to James Cameron's Aliens. The movie would have reportedly seen both the return of Newt as well as Michael Biehn's Hicks

It seems that the two movies went up against each other at the studio level and eventually Ridley Scott won out. We got Alien: Covenant and the last thing we heard from Neill Blomkamp was that his idea was basically dead.

For what it's worth, Sigourney Weaver's comments to The Hollywood Reporter make it sound like she hasn't entirely given up hope of making the movie. It seems that everybody is pretty busy right now. She and James Cameron are making 57 Avatar sequels and Neill Blomkamp has his own projects that he's working on, so it's certainly not going to happen soon, but could it still happen?

While it's certainly a long shot, a lot is changing in the future, so maybe there's a chance. Fox will be owned by Disney so they'll be the ones making decisions about the future of the franchise going forward.

In addition, the recent Halloween sequel pulled the same "soft reboot" idea in the way it ignored the previously made sequels, and it has scored big at the box office in doing so. I'm sure every studio in Hollywood is wondering what franchises they have that could do something similar, and Alien is certainly one of them.

The fact that both Sigourney Weaver and James Cameron are on board the idea will certainly help. Cameron is currently making several sequels to his record-breaking Avatar franchise and if he makes Disney as much money as they are likely hoping, he may have the ability to make some other things happen with another big franchise.

Neill Blomkamp's Alien 5 is a film that I would love to see happen one day.I loved everything that I heard about it and in a recent interview with THR, Sigourney Weaver was asked if we'd ever see the movie get made and she in her answer she explains how much she and director James Cameron loved the idea that Blomkamp came up with for the film:
