Could Black Widow Be Rated R? Marvel Rumored To Be Considering It

Marvel's Phase 4 lineup is still largely a mystery, but new projects are slowly but surely filling in the gaps. One of them is the long-awaited Black Widow solo movie. Not too much is known about the film, but a new rumor claims it's possible an R-rating is on the table. However, it's not clear at this point if Marvel will go through with that or not.

Ever since the commercial and critical success of the R-rated Deadpool, the gates were opened for more R-rated superhero projects to hit the theaters. Fox found success with Logan and Deadpool, and we're about to get an R-rated Hellboy, but fans have wondered if Marvel was ever going to join the trend. The fact that the studio is owned by the family-friendly Disney pretty much ended that speculation before it could begin. Or so it seemed.

Charles Murphy from That Hashtag Show took to Twitter to share that he learned Marvel Studios was discussing whether to make Black Widow R-rated or not. Murphy clarified his statement by saying there was no way to know if it will be R-rated at this point in time, but it's been said that R-rated Marvel movies are a possibility.

It's true that both Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger have said in the past that R-rated Marvel movies weren't out of the question. They didn't say that anything was in the works, but the possibility at least exists.

Of all the projects that Marvel has revealed to be in development, it would make the most sense for Black Widow to be rated R. There are rumors that the movie will be a prequel about Widow's time as an agent of the Red Room, so she definitely was involved in some grisly shit. Violent espionage missions certainly fall under the rated-R umbrella.

If it will be R-rated or not though is anyone's guess. The movie is still in development and we likely won't get word on a rating for a while. Marvel movies have always been PG-13, so this would be new territory for them. I don't think a Black Widow movie would necessarily have to be R-rated but it really depends on what the story is and where director Cate Shortland wants to take the movie.

Details about the Black Widow movie are slim, but it will feature Scarlett Johansson reprising her role as the spy-turned-Avenger. Cate Shortland directs, with a screenplay penned by Jac Schaeffer. There's bound to be more updates about the project down the line, so stick with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated as soon as we can. Avengers: Infinity War - Rate And Discuss With Spoilers

Before we even begin setting up our Rate and Discuss column for Avengers: Infinity War, we'd like to remind our readers that hardcore spoilers and discussion will be present in this story. So if you don't want to experience even the slightest of spoilers for this big ticket blockbuster, don't read on. Use your Time Stone and back out of here, only to come back later and prepare to bargain with the spoilerific questions and thoughts we're about to throw out. With that out of the way, Avengers: Infinity War has finally arrived, and we're still catching our damned breath!

So while we're trying to pull it together after the sensational experience that is the culmination of 10 years of Marvel Studios history, it's time for you, the audience, to rate and discuss your experience with the film. Thanos may demand your silence, but we want to hear everything you have to say about the 19th Marvel Studios film to cross our screens. Now as far as the critic mob is concerned, Avengers: Infinity War is doing pretty well. In fact, our own official review chimed into the chorus of positivity with the following praises:

It's a unique, exceptional achievement that somehow leaves you both fully satisfied and desperate for more, and ranks among the best adventures we've seen yet from this stellar franchise.

Naturally, that's a fantastic pull quote, yet it only scratches the surface of the emotions being felt tonight. Which is why, in the case of Avengers: Infinity War, it feels more important than ever to discuss what we've all just seen on screen, and what could happen in Avengers 4 next year. With that in mind, please read the following discussion questions, and provide your answers in the comments at the end:

Should Marvel Studios have scheduled Avengers: Infinity War / Avengers 4 to release closer together, a la Matrix Reloaded / Matrix Revolutions?Do you think Avengers: Infinity War works well enough as a stand-alone film, or does it need the second part to truly function?Which deaths in Avengers: Infinity War do you think will be reversed, and which ones do you think are permanent? In your opinion, which was the most devastating death in Avengers: Infinity War?What do you think is the "endgame" that Doctor Strange put into motion, and how will it come into play in Avengers 4?How many times do you think you'll go to the theater to see Avengers: Infinity War?

Now for the kind of hard part. You've just seen what could be the biggest movie of 2018, or at the very least the biggest movie of the summer, and you're now being asked for a star rating. While you might feel you need to see the film at least once more, we still invite you to rate your experience with Avengers: Infinity War, based on your current feelings. Along with your rating, please provide your reasoning, along with your rating and discussion answers, at the end of this story.

After thoroughly evaluating Avengers: Infinity War, we kindly suggest the following reading materials as a way to prepare yourself for subsequent viewings in the theater. In particular, if you're trying to figure out how the events of this film tie into the Marvel Cinematic Universe's past, you can read our rundown of nine important moments that came before. Also, feel free to learn more about how Chris Evans convinced the higher ups to let him see the entire script to Avengers: Infinity War, as well as the Marvel Cosmic character that almost wound up in the film. Finally, if people are asking you if it's still safe to get tickets at the box office for any showings this weekend, send them to this story about how the film is selling out quite a bit of its initial showings.

And there you have it. Avengers: Infinity War is currently in theaters, but please be mindful of those around you who haven't seen the film. Remember, Thanos demands your silence, at least he does in mixed company. Though if you want to see any of our follow-up coverage and discussion on the film, head to our official page for Avengers: Infinity War for all further updates. Until next time, here's hoping you brought enough tissues to dry your eyes between today and our next Rate and Discuss.
