The Controversial Solo: A Star Wars Story Scene That Sold Disney On The Movie

The Controversial Solo: A Star Wars Story Scene That Sold Disney On The Movie

The post-mortem on Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story has begun. Did it open in the wrong month? It is too close to Star Wars: The Last Jedi? Is Star Wars "fatigue" a thing that Disney needs to contend with? We can continue to have these conversations for weeks as the rest of the movie's box-office fortunes play out. But when it comes down to WHY Disney agreed to make a young Han Solo movie, screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan tells CinemaBlend that it was one defining scene in the hero's narrative that convinced the executives that this was a movie worth telling. During a recent press event for Solo: A Star Wars Story, Kasdan recalled:

Five years ago, when I came onto the thing -- and Disney wasn't on when I came on, then three weeks later, they owned the company -- and they came up to Marin [California] and Kathy [Kennedy] got the people who were already working on it to make a five-minute presentation to Bob Iger and Alan Horn and everyone. My presentation was, [Han] comes to an immigration spot and someone asks, 'What's your name?' It's not just that he doesn't have a name, which tells you a lot about his history. He says 'I have no people.' That to me is so forlorn and so isolating and rife, and the guy fills in his name. Bob Iger said 'Alright, I'm in.' That was it. That was the moment. He reacted to it the way I reacted to it, which was, it's very moving. This was a guy who has nothing. Someone plants a name on him. He doesn't even know the guy. It sticks for the rest of the saga.

There's a certain irony to this admission, as several fans who have been vocal about their issues with Solo: A Star Wars Story on social media over the opening weekend have signaled out this scene as one of the things that really rubbed them the wrong way about Han Solo's journey. This scene, where a military recruiter tags Han as "Solo," and the scene where Han invents Chewbacca's nickname have received Twitter scorn (a valuable commodity) as Solo has tried to find its way in a competitive marketplace. It either falls into a camp of "questions we didn't need answered," or "too silly to actually believe."

Personally, that scene where Han (Alden Ehrenreich) receives his infamous moniker didn't strike me as being false. It felt credible, like, if this is how it happened, I'm willing to accept that. And now that I know that this is the impetus for Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon, to pitch a solo Han Solo story, then the reveal has a bit more weight to it. Though, I doubt that is going to change any minds.

Solo: A Star Wars Story got off to a disappointing start at the box office, hauling in an estimated $83.3 million at the domestic box for the three-day total. Disney is looking for a strong Monday to salvage the looks of the movie's performance, but even still, there are going to be some difficult conversations at Lucasfilm about the types of movies that they make going forward, and when they are planning to release them.

Solo: A Star Wars Story offers a telling of the iconic scoundrel that will undoubtedly leave fans of the franchise divided in at least one regard: its explanation of the origin of the character's surname. However, that very seen is what led Disney to approve the spinoff.
'Solo': Why Disney Might Be Getting Ready For the Movie to Fail

Iconic "Star Wars" character Lando Calrissian is pansexual, according to one of the "Solo" movie co-writers. Though LGBTQ+ representation in a major studio movie is welcome news, many are still left feeling as if this revelation doesn't truly count for proper inclusion.

The Hated Solo Name Scene Convinced Disney To Make the Movie

However, Solo: A Star Wars Story screenwriter, Lawrence Kasdan, believes it to be a vital scene in the film and was even used as a selling point in pitching the film to Disney. Speaking to Cinema Blend, Kasdan discusses the importance of the scene along with how it was used to pitch the idea to Disney:
This 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' Controversial Scene Sold

It's ironic, then, that Solo: A Star Wars Story's co-writer, Jon Kasdan, earmarked this section of the script as the one most likely to get the project greenlit when pitching to Disney.
'Star Wars' fans exasperated over Lando's sexuality in 'Solo

For those who miss Han Solo's presence in the Star Wars universe, Solo: A Star Wars Story is here to fill in that gap as well as tell the famous smuggler's origin story, and Disney was sold because of a controversial scene present in the first fifteen minutes of the movie.

People Still Yell Bangarang At Hook's Dante Basco Every Single Day

People Still Yell Bangarang At Hook's Dante Basco Every Single Day

Many actors would love to play just one iconic character in their career, but doing so can have some fairly odd consequences. Such is the case for Dante Basco. In 1991, at the age of 16, the actor played the role of Rufio in Steven Spielberg's Hook, and today, at the age of 43, he says that people still shout the Lost Boys catchphrase "Bagarang" at him on the street. According to Basco...

A lot. It's kind of weird because I've been Rufio in my life now longer than I haven't been Rufio, you know? Hearing 'Bangarang' or people shouting out 'Rufio', it could be a daily occurrence sometimes which is crazy. And, I don't really think about it too much because again it's like, you just kind of walk around the world. I notice it more when I'm hanging out with newer friends and they point it out a lot. I'm like, 'Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. That happens a lot.' But yeah, It's weird. People walking by or driving by even, like how does that happen? You're just walking down the street. So it happens. It could be at least a weekly occurrence depending on where I'm at in time, it could be a daily occurrence. Which is pretty crazy because that was such a long time ago.

As Dante Basco says, it's been a long time. It's been almost 30 years and people still make reference to the movie he was in. It certainly goes to show just what a profound impact Hook had on at least one generation, and possibly those that have come after it.

Basco tells ComicBook.com that Hook became one of those movies that was seemingly inescapable for a time. It was the kind of movie that babysitters, grandparents, and substitute teachers would sit you down in front of to keep you occupied. As such, it became a movie that a lot of kids saw a lot. Moments in the movie were memorized and repeated over and over again. When that generation thinks of childhood, they think of Hook.

All in all, it seems like Dante Basco has taken it all in stride. He seems at peace with his minor, but perpetual, celebrity as Rufio, the leader of the Lost Boys. At least he was until Peter Pan came back to town. He was even recently involved in a short film, not coincidently, titled Bangarang, which acted as a prequel to Hook which told Rufio's origin story.

Now, both old and new generations can check out Hook in all new way as a brand new 4K Blu-ray print of the film is being released. This will undoubtedly expose an entirely new generation to Hook as their parents make them watch the movie they remember so fondly. Then they'll be even more people shouting "Bagarang" at Dante Basco.

What Dave Bautista Says About James Gunn Losing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

What Dave Bautista Says About James Gunn Losing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3

Earlier today, the movie world was rocked by the news about James Gunn being removed from Marvel Studios' upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. It was a hugely surprising move that seemingly came out of nowhere, and as a result there are hundreds of questions floating around. Ultimately it will take days, weeks, and months to get all of the answers, but on the subject of how Gunn's cast feels about the move, at the very least we now know Dave Bautista's thoughts on the matter:

Most of the Guardians of the Galaxy castmembers have yet to make any public statement about the James Gunn firing (Pom Klementieff notably cancelled interviews at San Diego Comic-Con this afternoon), however Dave Bautista broke that silence earlier today with a post on his official Twitter page. It's a message of unwavering support for the filmmaker - at the same time recognizing that he is a flawed human being, like any of us - and is very direct with his opinion of the situation. In short, the man best known as Drax The Destroyer is definitely not happy that one of his favorite filmmakers has been fired from one of his upcoming projects.

Obviously we'll have to wait for more official comments to roll in from actors like Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff, but it's hard to imagine any of them having opinions on James Gunn's firing that differ from what Dave Bautista had to say about the situation. Existing in its own special corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Guardians of the Galaxy created a special little family with the actors Gunn brought together, and many of the stars saw their careers completely change as a result of the project. Let's not forget that Bautista wasn't really taken seriously as an actor before taking on the role of Drax (something that has changed entirely), and before Star-Lord, Pratt was basically just known for being the chubby goofball on Parks and Recreation. In addition to making two wonderful movies that sing with his unique voice, Gunn legitimately changed lives with his comic book adaptations, and one can assume those individuals will eventually go to bat for him.

While it's unclear exactly what kind of impact the opinion of the actors will have on this whole situation, it is an extremely important factor in the future development of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. If the cast on the whole winds up being unilaterally supportive of James Gunn, that should make it extremely difficult for Disney and Marvel to try and find a filmmaker to replace him. Not only that, it's notable that Sean Gunn - James Gunn's brother - has a super important role in the franchise, not only playing the Ravager known as Kraglin, but doing the on-set motion capture work for Rocket Raccoon. There may be a serious behind-the-scenes conflict that erupts as a result of this situation, and there are going to be a lot of eyes on it between now and the movie's expected start of production at the start of next year.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 doesn't have an official release date yet, but it has been confirmed that the movie will come out some time in 2020. We will obviously continue to follow this story very closely, so stay tuned here on CinemaBlend for the latest updates.

Fantastic Beasts 2 Box Office: Grindelwald Easily Wins The Weekend

Fantastic Beasts 2 Box Office: Grindelwald Easily Wins The Weekend

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald finally had its long awaited debut this weekend, and while the numbers probably weren't what the franchise had hoped for, they were plenty strong enough to fight off holdovers like Dr. Seuss' The Grinch, as well as buzzy newcomers like Widows and Instant Family. In all, the second round of the Harry Potter spinoff took home an estimated $64,000,000+, which is more than enough to fill up a vault or two at Gringotts.

The first Fantastic Beasts premiered to more than $74,000,000 in its opening weekend and eventually passed more than $500,000,000 in worldwide box office, per Box Office Mojo. Its success was enough for Warner Bros to move forward with the larger franchise. Barring a shocking dropoff, this opening too should be enough for the Wizarding World to barrel ahead. Should that be considered a success? That's hard to say. Clearly, Fantastic Beasts has not had anywhere near the cultural footprint of Harry Potter. There's no way this was the best case scenario for anyone involved. That being said, the fact that the Harry Potter franchise in its current spinoff form is still trucking ahead and easily winning box office weekends while attracting tons of visitors to Universal Studios should not be discounted. Not everything has to set records in order to be successful.

As for the rest of the movies, both The Grinch and Bohemian Rhapsody had pretty strong holds of over fifty percent retention from the prior weekend, and each has now passed more than $125,000,000 in domestic grosses. The Grinch will likely finish its run much further ahead on account of it being one weekend newer and children's movies typically holding on for more total weeks. Still, it's a solid thumbs up for both movies, and it should mean we'll see more from The Grinch down the road and most likely, more music biopics about classic rock bands too. I know you're all itching for something about behind the scenes drama with The Eagles or Fleetwood Mac.

The results weren't nearly as exciting for either The Girl In The Spider's Web or The Nutcracker And The Four Realms. Both films fell out of the top five and seem headed for very frustrating total grosses. So, conversely I probably wouldn't be expecting more from the Girl series or any of the other Nutcracker-related realms.
