Barry Jenkins Moonlight Follow Up, If Beale Street Could Talk, Drops Beautiful Trailer

It's been just under two years since director Barry Jenkins' acclaimed drama Moonlight was released. While the incredibly poignant Best Picture winner still lingers heavily on movie fans' minds, it will soon be time to see Jenkins next work, If Beale Street Could Talk. The new film based on the 1974 James Baldwin novel of the same name is coming to theaters this November, just in time for awards season. If Beale Street Could Talk tells a compelling story of young couple Fonny and Tish who fall in love on the streets of Harlem in the 70's. They're soon torn apart when Fonny is falsely accused of raping a woman and imprisoned. When Tish finds out she is pregnant, her family and lawyer work to find the evidence to prove Fonny is innocent before their baby is born. Check out this emotional first trailer, but don't be surprised if Jenkins' pristine cinematic shots give you chills.

The trailer opens with Tish hesitantly trying to speak with her mother, played by the remarkable Regina King. Warm introductions to the characters and a distinct setting follow, as Fonny and Tish take romantic strolls down streets and smile at one another. The cuts are alluring to the eye, while vaguely introducing the film's plot. A soundbite from author James Baldwin plays in the background, as the teaser grows more intense with each cut. Roaring arguments between Tish and her family intensify the trailer, and the uneasy sounds of subway rails screech as Fonny (Stephan James) runs to the entrance, calling out. Audiences will be quickly invested in the relationship between Fonny and Tish, as they power through the miserable circumstances they are faced with in the film.

Cinephiles may remember Stephan James in the Jesse Owens biopic Race, or his role in Selma. If Beale Street Could Talk will mark the film debut of KiKi Layne, who also plays Tish. The cast's performances look incredible, and could possibly follow up the award-winning performances in Moonlight.

James Baldwin's narration in the trailer is especially memorable as it focuses on the struggle to find "your role in this country, and what your future is in it." Baldwin was the subject of the recent documentary I Am Not Your Negro, an account of civil right activists and his close friends Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Medgar Evers. The author's works have focused heavily on the black experience and race relations in America, and If Beale Street Could Talk won't be an exception. In the novel, Fonny gets sent to jail due to a racist policeman's accusations, which is briefly introduced in a short close-up shot in the trailer.

The upcoming film will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and come to theaters on November 30th.

You Know, Mr. Incredible Isn't That Good Of A Superhero

You Know, Mr. Incredible Isn't That Good Of A Superhero

Warning: Spoilers for Incredibles 2 are in play. If you haven't seen the film for yourself, please bookmark this story, and come back when you've caught up

Throughout both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, we've followed the adventures of the Parr family and their super-powered antics in a world where heroes are illegal. In the world of the films, Mr. Incredible has always been a big deal, with Incredibles 2 making a point to draw the comedy out of the fact that his storied crime-fighting career doesn't mean he's the best hope for legalizing superheroes once again. But after seeing the film a second time, a question burrowed its way into my mind, undermining all of my previous thoughts: is Mr. Incredible really that good of a superhero to begin with? After some thought, and careful consideration, I have to say that no, he really isn't.

I don't mean to knock Bob Parr or his Incredible alter ego, but take a look at the stats from the moments we've seen in his career. For starters, Winston and Evelyn Deavor's risk analysis portfolio only confirmed something we saw in The Incredibles and its sequel: wherever Mr. Incredible goes, mass property destruction follows. Now that's fine when you're fighting an Omnidroid on a tropical island that doesn't happen to be inhabited by a town the size of Municiberg or Metroville; but when you're in two towns that happen to have monorail service, and you've destroyed at least part of both, your record isn't exactly the best when it comes to saving the day.

Not to mention, while Bob's strength is still his best asset, Mr. Incredible has another nasty habit: his major villains always seem to get away in the opening of an Incredibles film. Both Bomb Voyage and The Underminer are still on the loose, free to commit as much wanton destruction and thievery as they please. With Bomb Voyage, there's obviously the excuse of Buddy, aka Syndrome, being a distraction at the worst time possible, so that's a slight bit of slack. But with The Underminer, Bob was so clumsy he got sucked into The Underminer's vehicle, and in the process of brawling with his nemesis, he smashes the controls that could have stopped the drill from penetrating through valuable city infrastructure.

The truth is, in the world of The Incredibles, Elastigirl actually is the better hero. Between being a certified pilot -- which has helped her survive two high-flying attempts on her life and the lives of those around her -- and an amazingly adept problem solver, she's like the Sherlock Holmes of the Incredibles universe. Taking both films as a mirror image of the same plot, Elastigirl figures out the villain's plot by asking the right questions; while Mr. Incredible only stumbles onto Syndrome's evil plans after he's successfully lured into an attempt on his life, endangering his family in the process.

Again, I don't want to draw all of the credit away from Robert Parr's super abilities. The man is pretty damned strong, and in the confines of a super team like that of his family unit in Incredibles 2, he's a valuable asset. Not to mention, as a character, seeing the Bob we knew from The Incredibles progress into an even more loving and supportive father, while also nurturing his kid's own powers, is something beautiful to behold. Hell, he even figured out New Math once he really put his mind to it, so clearly, he's not totally useless! But if he's really going to sit there and wonder just why he was sidelined for a good part of Incredibles 2's plot, or if he's wondering how he can up his hero game and become a better super powered man, he might just want to go back to the video tape and study his past just a little harder.

The Trick To Getting The Marvel Audience Excited For Whats Next, According To Joe Russo

The Trick To Getting The Marvel Audience Excited For Whats Next, According To Joe Russo

Modern blockbuster filmmaking can be tricky, particularly if you are working within the confines of a franchise. At a recent CinemaCon event featuring Elizabeth Banks, Anthony and Joe Russo, Dexter Fletcher and Olivia Wilde, the directors were talking about what the real trick is to keeping people excited for whats coming next.

It was actually Elizabeth Banks who hit the nail on the head when she mentioned she makes sure theres a surprise built-in somewhere for the audience particularly noting for people who think they knew who this person was but theres another layer, something more.

Riffing off of Banks initial comments based on her work in Pitch Perfect 2 and Charlies Angels, Avengers: Endgame director Joe Russo revealed Banks hit the nail on the head. That is, in fact, exactly what he and Anthony Russo try to do to keep Marvel audiences excited. He elaborated:

I think thats actually the critical kind of a something [Anthony] and I talk about all the time is that, in the age of social media the job of storyteller is to surprise because thats what generates conversation. And I think just looking at the work we do on these Marvel films, the choices that we make, at the end of each film theres something dramatic that happens to surprise the audience and then generates an incredible amount of excitement as they wait for the next movie.

At a CinemaCon luncheon, Joe Russo mentioned generating a conversation is key to keeping a narrative alive in the age of social media, but I also think this factor is important for keeping a conversation alive when there are more films coming in a franchise.

While Avengers: Endgame is being billed as the culmination of a 22-film narrative, certainly the Russo Brothers other films with Marvel have had to continue a through storyline in the franchise, and even Marvel as we know it wont be just completely ending after Endgame. Instead, it'll likely just look a little different with a focus on different characters moving forward.

Joe Russo also admitted the whole goal is to start a conversation about what just happened so that the fans can engage with the storytelling as they wait for the next chapter.

They can discuss it and argue about it. Its a really critical factor in modern storytelling, this notion of surprise.

I dont think anywhere has this concept been clearer than in the final minutes in Avengers: Infinity War in which our heroes almost defeat Thanos only to lose. In those minutes, Marvel fans worldwide saw many of their heroes disappear into dust and its an idea and a surprise weve been chewing on for a year as we wait for Avengers: Endgame.

Luckily, that wait is nearly over. Avengers: Endgame will be out on April 26 and weve already seen a full scene from the upcoming film, which also dropped during CinemaCon this year.

Now, the only question is: What surprise will the Russo Brothers have in store for us this time?
