Holmes And Watson Reviews Are In, Heres What The Critics Think

It's the Christmas equivalent of coal in the stocking. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly released a comedy into theaters over the Christmas frame, and currently, their Holmes & Watson enjoys a Zero % Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes.

Granted, it's only 12 reviews. The movie didn't press screen, prompting critics to drag themselves to theaters over the holiday to see if Will Ferrell as the legendary detective and John C. Reilly as his trusted partner could generate some laughs. Well, they didn't. The reviews have been savage, with Ben Kenigsberg of the New York Times writing:

As the movie stands, smuggling in booze to dispel the sense of dull routine could only help.

The consensus on the whodunit appears to be that it coasts for a little while on the chemistry of the two men, who have appeared together in memorable comedies like Step-Brothers and Talladega Nights. However, without Adam McKay at the helm, the guys have to carry too much of the load, and THR writes:

You can feel the flop sweat emanating from the third onscreen pairing of Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. ... Holmes & Watson features the duo parodying Arthur Conan Doyle's famous characters to devastatingly unfunny effect. Numerous talented British thespians are wasted in supporting roles in this Christmas turkey that, not surprisingly, wasn't screened in advance for critics. Although making them troop out to theaters Christmas morning is something of which even Ebenezer Scrooge wouldn't have approved.

Yeah, safe to say a few critics really took this movie to task just because it made them head to the theaters over the holiday. Can't say I blame them. But the movie also lacked any real reason to be excited about actually seeing the comedy. In the IndieWire review, David Ehrlich states:

Usually, you'd have to watch the Golden Globes to see this much wasted talent. As it stands, the only compelling mystery about Holmes & Watson is how so many funny people have been squeezed into such an unfunny movie, a movie that isn't nearly smart enough to recognize how stupid it should have been.

While the AV Club definitively summarizes:

If there are any new jokes left to tell about Holmes, they're nowhere to be found in the abysmal Holmes & Watson, which might be the worst feature-length film ever made about the 'consulting detective' from Baker Street.

Basically, stay away. Holmes & Watson doesn't work. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly certainly will work again. Probably even together. But this comedy hopefully taught them that they need to do more than just slide into the period costumes of two famous characters to make audiences laugh.

Tyler Perry is a multi-talented presence in the film world, serving as an actor, writer, director, and producer for countless projects. But his name is perhaps most commonly associated with his over the top character Mabel "Madea" Simmons. Perry's relationship with Madea goes back to his 1991 play I Can Do Bad All By Myself, while she made her silver screen debut in Diary Of a Mad Black Woman. But he's hanging up her wig and glasses soon, as his new release A Madea Family Funeral will be his last time playing the character.

I had the chance to see A Madea Family Funeral, and then speak with Tyler Perry about his long tenure as the title character. When I asked him about the transformation to become Madea, he revealed that she lives just below the surface of his psyche, with:

No, its right now, anytime I get it. You know, its just a character. Shes there. When Im writing shes in my head, so all of those things are just accoutrement to help her come alive to other people. But shes very alive in my head all the time.

It looks like Tyler Perry doesn't need the various Madea fixins in order to transform into his signature character. Instead, he lives with her all the time. It's no short wonder that she's had such a long career on film, or that Perry is able to juggle multiple characters in addition to his work as a director.

Tyler Perry's comments make a great deal of sense, as he's had a long history with Madea. A Madea Family Funeral will mark the whopping 11th onscreen appearance of the character, in addition to the myriad stage plays that Perry has also written and starred in. You have to be especially close to a character to continue playing her for decades, and Tyler Perry and Madea clearly have a very close bond.

Hallelujer and goodnight, because A Madea Family Funeral will be Tyler Perry's last time getting into drag and dishing out zingers as his signature character. Additionally, he'll be introducing a new character in Heathrow, who the actor/director told me was his favorite to inhabit during Madea's swan song film. Who knows? Maybe Heathrow will end up getting a franchise of his own.

One of the most talked about issues in our current sociopolitical is that of wage inequality between the sexes. With male and female pay rates being significantly different for some time, the issue has been brought to the attention of many notable figures in the political spectrum, as well as the celebrity world. And one of the largest companies in the world is now being brought into the crossfire, as Walt Disney Studios is being sued over that very subject.

Two employees, LaRonda Rasmussen and Karen Moore, are suing Disney for damages pertaining to everything from benefits to pay lost from the alleged inequality. With the claims of a wage gap paying tens of thousands fewer dollars to female employees, this suit might get more intense as it looks like it will be set up as a potential class action complaint.

In addition to any monetary demands that result from this lawsuit, Rasmussen and Moores complaint also stipulates that Disney should create a framework inside of its corporate structure that remedies and prevents such inequality from happening within the company ever again. This is something that representatives for Disney have claimed already exists within the company, and has done so long before this complaint was filed.

While it remains to be seen just how valid these claims are, and what sort of proceedings and judgements will result from it, these legal movements come at an interesting time. Disney has recently completed its integration of 21st Century Fox into it corporate holdings, so this is the sort of story that most companies would love to not see land on their desk in the early days of such an undertaking. But like it or not, pay inequality is not an issue that will go away lightly, and whether this gap is present or not at Disney, the company will obviously have to address the matter until all parties involved are satisfied.

This complaint reported by Deadline is far from the first legal complaint that Disney has received from one of its employees, and it certainly wouldnt be the last. Familiar with such a political firebrand of a complaint, Disney has taken big stances in certain issues of social importance themselves. So hopefully, this scenario can be resolved in due time, with the sensitivity required, and in a manner that can make everyone happy.

At the moment, this case seems to be in the earliest phases of development, so theres a possibility that Disney might even be able to settle out of court, or agree to some sort of solution so as to avoid a trial altogether. For now, all we can do is watch, and wait.

Disney currently has Dumbo in theaters, with its next big release being Avengers: Endgame, set to break the world of the box office on April 26th.
