Sarah Paulson Has A Hard Time With Spoilers After Glass And American Horror Story

Starting with the Marvel Cinematic Universe's serialized storytelling, shared universes and crossover-heavy shows have become commonplace. Both the small and silver screen have plenty of these massively popular projects, which are often shrouded in mystery until release. Just ask Sarah Paulson, who stars in the ultra-secretive American Horror Story.

Sarah Paulson also has another super secretive project coming out with M. Night Shyamalan's Glass. Paulson plays newcomer Ellie Stapler, squaring off against the cast of both Unbreakable and Split in the crossover movie. I recently spoke with Paulson about playing Ellie, and her penchant for picking ultra secretive projects. It turns out, all the spoiler dodging is exhausting, as she put it:

It's always hard because with everything I do there's this level of secrecy around it. I'm not able to talk about it as freely as you would be. Like when I did the movie Carol or Ocean's 8. You can talk about the plot, you can talk about your experience making it in a really fun, free way. This is hard, because there are spoilers. American Horror Story I can never talk about the plot, even when I know exactly what the plan is, I still can't talk about it. Bird Box I couldn't.

That's how the cookie crumbles. If you want to work in super popular projects featuring ambitious crossovers and years of anticipation, you're going to have to keep it tight lipped. And for Sarah Paulson, this can be a bit trying while doing press.

Sarah Paulson's comments make a great deal of sense, given the high stakes of her most recent film projects. Every season of American Horror Story is heavily guarded, as Ryan Murphy crafts a new setting, set of characters, and moments of horror. Paulson has been in every scene of the fan favorite series, and is often at the center of crossovers, as she plays her myriad characters from the past eight seasons.

Then there's her role as Ellie Staple in Glass. M. Night Shyamalan's new release is almost two decades in the making, as it completes the narrative started back with 2000's Unbreakable. Shyamalan is a director synonymous with twist endings, which must be guarded in order for them to retain power. As such, Sarah Paulson is once again unable speak freely about her character, and the contents of Glass.

Luckily for the Emmy Award winning actress, Glass is in theaters now, with every twist, turn, and comic book showdown available for moviegoers. Following the wild success of Split, the pressure is on for M. Night Shyamalan to complete his trilogy, including his perspective on superheroes. As for American Horror Story, Sarah Paulson will just have to wait until the fall, when Season 9 premiers with a mysterious new theme.

There's no film franchise quite as beloved as Star Wars. The epic space opera has been passed down across generations, with the fandom currently in the midst of its third main trilogy. The franchise has been historically focused on the Skywalker family line, which began when Anakin and Padme had twins with Leia and Luke. The latter is played famously by actor Mark Hamill, although it turns out he's never actually met his onscreen mother-- Natalie Portman. When Star Wars' official Twitter wished the Oscar winning actress a Happy Birthday, Hamill responded with a short and hilarious Tweet.

It looks like the galaxy far, far away is bigger than we thought. While it seems like everyone knows everyone in Hollywood, somehow (per his Tweet),Mark Hamill and Natalie Portman have never crossed paths--despite being Star Wars royalty. What would Padme think about it?While Mark Hamill starred in the original trilogy of Star Wars films (and The Last Jedi), the prequel trilogy revolved around Luke's parents, Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala. We saw the softer side of Darth Vader, and the tragic end that their forbidden love ultimately brought. While the prequel trilogy is generally referred to negatively from fans and cinephiles alike, Natalie Portman played a badass diplomat and fighter, whose final moments saw the original trilogy's heroes being born.It's a little surprising that Mark Hamill and Natalie Portman never met throughout the filming, release, and advertising of the prequel trilogy. While Hamill had nothing to do with those movies, he has a continued relationship and respect with George Lucas, who directed both the original and prequels. He certainly attended the films' premieres, although it looks like he never actually crossed paths with Natalie Portman at the time. It seems like that would have made for a great photo opportunity, but Mark never actually met Padme. Bummer.In the decade and change since Revenge of the Sith was released, Natalie Portman has distanced herself from the Star Wars franchise. She doesn't haven an interest in the new films, something echoes Portman's current thoughts on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The actress is always moving forward, and therefore doesn't hold her legacy to the fans quite as preciously as Mark Hamill.It should be interesting to see how Mark Hamill's place in the Star Wars universe changes in the wake of The Last Jedi. While Luke seems to have perished after his Force Projection, perhaps he could return as a Force Ghost in Episode IX. Given Carrie Fisher's passing, there may be a space for an original hero to return for the upcoming sequel.Solo: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now. Unofficially, there seems to be a war between those who support Star Wars: The Last Jedi and those who are embracing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. With J.J. Abrams returning to the fold as co-writer and director of this new film, it felt to some like a bit of a rejection of the bold new direction that Rian Johnson had brought his Star Wars film towards. Those feelings are invalid now, as Johnson himself saw the trailer for the ninth episode of the Skywalker Saga, and shared the following rave review:

Its hard to argue with a statement like that, as Rian Johnson is as much of a Star Wars fan as J.J. Abrams is. While some may have thought that Abrams return would look radically different from Johnsons middle installment of this third act trilogy, the trailer to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker looks like it fits nicely into the trajectory that the previous film already set up.

Whats also nice to know is the admiration between these two directors is mutual, as earlier today J.J. Abrams handed out a very special thank you to Rian Johnson, in particular for hiring actor Kelly Marie Tran. This comes after Johnson commented on how hes actually interested to see what J.J. Abrams does with the Star Wars universe in his latest film, even if it happens to retcon pieces of The Last Jedi in order to close this portion of the series.

Though its not like Rian Johnson isnt heading back to that galaxy far, far away himself. Much as Abrams came back for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Johnson will be making more magic in the franchise himself. As previously reported, Rian Johnson is still on track for the trilogy of Star Wars films that take place outside of the Skywalker Sagas episodic structure. When exactly thatll take place is in question, particularly in the light of the hiatus recently announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger. But at least for now, as exhibited in his Twitter feeds latest output, Johnson is still very much on board for whatever comes next.

Star Wars fans, as any fandom at its best behavior, lift each other up in the name of their appreciation of the series. Now that both J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson have provided a bridge between their theoretical halves of the property, its up to the fans of both directors to meet in the middle, as they await this next and last chapter of the classic story arc to come to a close.
