Solo: A Star Wars Story - Take A First Look At Han, Lando And More

We waited so long to feast our eyes on some form of footage for Ron Howard's anticipated Solo: A Star Wars Story that we hardly know what to do with ourselves now that we have a trailer! The clip, which aired on Good Morning America, gave us our first full look at Howard's vision for this Star Wars prequel story -- not THOSE prequels, just a prequel -- and presented tantalizing footage of Alden Ehrenreich as Harrison Ford's iconic, heroic character.

So, with a magnifying glass in hand, let's look at new images and screen grabs of the top cast members in Ron Howard's Solo: A Star Wars Story, and share a little bit about what we know about where they stand in this narrative:

Han SoloA failed recruit at the Flight Academy, Han Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) still dreams of being the galaxy's top pilot, and we learn that he's been running scams on the street since the age of 10. He'll be recruited to a team for a mission that... we don't learn a ton about. But he's bringing an old friend with him, as we find out in the next section.

ChewbaccaHan's longtime co-pilot, and hairy best friend. We don't learn here how Chewie and Han meet -- the Wookiee already speaks a language Han can translate in these scenes. But we expect all of that to be laid out when we see the full movie in May.

Lando CalrissianSocial media damn near melted down when we got our first look at the smooth-ass Donald Glover playing Lando Calrissian, an ally of Han Solo who, we know, will eventually betray him (years from now in The Empire Strikes Back). There are a handful of important story beats that have to take place between Han and Lando, the biggest involving the trading of possession of the Millennium Falcon, which gets a lot of screen time in this tease.

Qi'raNow we're getting into new characters, and Emilia Clarke's Qi'ra (once thought to be Kira) looks likes she will have a deep personal connection to Alden Ehrenreich's Han Solo. She is in numerous scenes with him, going back to his early days racing small crafts. She boasts several different looks in the film. Will this movie bounce around to a number of different time periods?

Tobias BeckettDescribed in early materials as a mentor to Han Solo, Woody Harrelson's Tobias also appears to be the man who recruits Solo for a mission. He's later scene racing through space with Han, so Tobias isn't a "stay back at the base" type of mentor. Maybe he's more like Obi-wan in A New Hope, willing to tag along and get his hands a little dirty?

Thandie Newton's CharacterNow we get into total mysteries. Thandie Newton plays a character who has yet to be identified, but she shows up in the trailer after Woody talks about putting together a team. In addition to her human assistance, we also get...

Some trailers give too much away. Solo: A Star Wars Story laid the basic foundation for the movie that's coming in May, but beyond that, still held most of its secrets close to its signature vest. Considering how important Superman is to the world of comic books, and how massive a pop culture icon he is, it's remarkable that only three actors have ever played the role on the big screen since the 1970s. Part of the reason for that is that, while there have been many more attempts to bring the hero to the screen, many of them have failed for various reasons, which means many actors who could have been Superman never had the chance.

One of Superman movies never made was the J.J. Abrams penned Superman: Flyboy, and one of the actors who auditioned for the lead role when that idea was still in development was Brendan Fraser. His audition included actually putting on the Superman costume, which the actor recently admitted, was like turning into an actual superhero.

You feel kind of invincible, [like] I can fly The cape actually makes you think you have the power of flight even though you know you dont.

One can only imagine what it's like to put on a screen ready version of the Superman costume. Of course, it makes you feel like you can actually fly. We've seen just happen on the screen. With the cape and everything it's not surprising that Brendan Fraser apparently felt like he could leap into the air and actually start soaring, wouldn't you?

Unfortunately, for Fraser, he never really got close to actually becoming Superman. Others, like Paul Walker and James Marsden also auditioned, but Abrams script would never actually get made. When Bryan Singer ended up in the director's chair, he took the project in an entirely new direction and cast Brandon Routh in the movie that would become Superman Returns.

And of course, all of this happened after Tim Burton's ill-fated Superman project, that would have seen Nicholas Cage play the role of the Man of Steel.

Brendan Fraser's comments to Yahoo seem to indicate he doesn't take not getting the role too bad. He's mostly just happy to have been one of the few to actually don the costume. Very few can actually say they've had that chance, and so he wears the fact like a badge of honor, or like a superhero's cape as the case may be.

Henry Cavill would become the third man to actually play Superman on the big screen in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. The future of the character is in question at this point. None of DC's announced films are Superman or Justice League movies, so there's no obvious place for the character to appear again. Some reports have indicated that Cavill is done with the role, but that seems to be an open question at this point.

Fraser still gets to be part of the popular superhero genre, as he co-stars in the popular Doom Patrol series for the DC Universe streaming service.
