The Number Of Characters Actually Featured In Avengers: Infinity War

I don't know if you've heard, but Avengers: Infinity War has a lot of characters. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has built up an impressive roster in the last 10 years, and it is bringing characters from all 18 its films to bear as heroes from across the Marvel spectrum suit up for the battle with Thanos. But how many characters are actually featured in Avengers: Infinity War? A lot of numbers have been thrown around, but what's the real count? Well, CinemaBlend's own Eric Eisenberg sat down with Avengers: Infinity War screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to find out. Here's what they said:

Christopher Markus: Is it good for me to say? I've gone through the script recently to see how many people have lines, that are faces you recognize from others movies. It's at least 40.Stephen McFeely: I can't think of too many people who didn't, you know. Justin Hammer.

Wow, that is a lot. We know that there are a lot of characters in this movie and that the MCU's huge cast of heroes will be in attendance, but for 40 people to have speaking roles is pretty remarkable. There aren't 40 costumed heroes in the MCU (not yet anyway), but as Christopher Markus told CinemaBlend, these characters are all people that we recognize from other MCU movies. So that means that on top of the titular heroes, a lot of the supporting cast of Marvel's vast universe will be getting some time to shine as well. Apparently, though, Sam Rockwell's Justin Hammer won't be one of those in attendance. Marvel doesn't often bring villains back, and he wouldn't be a strong candidate if it did, so this isn't surprising.

This is also really cool because these are faces we recognize, and that amount of crossover in one film fulfills the promise of this bold cinematic experiment. It delivers the connected world that fans have enjoyed for decades in the comics. Seeing faces pop up that you forgot about or didn't expect is a big part of the appeal of Avengers: Infinity War, and seeing all of those faces, especially the more prominent heroes, interact for the first time is what we've all been waiting for.

Hearing that this many recognizable characters are present in the movie might seem a bit daunting, and it wouldn't be unreasonable to fear that Infinity War might be overstuffed. However, this is a long movie, and there is no way that 40-plus characters will be featured prominently. Most of them will probably only have a line or two. It will really be the core heroes that get the most to do, and we've heard that Thanos himself along with Chris Hemsworth's Thor will have some of the most screen time. CinemaBlend also sat down for an interview with Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo and got their take on the number of characters spread across Infinity War and Avengers 4. Take a look:

So it sounds like that 60+ number that was being thrown around for a while is really the count for both parts of Marvel's Phase 3 capper. That makes you wonder if Avengers 4 will have the full count or if there will be characters that show up in one of the films, but not the other. That certainly raises the question about characters who might not make it out of Infinity War, but suffice it to say, neither of these two Avengers films will be lacking in characters.

Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters this weekend. You should go see it and stay frosty about spoilers; you'll definitely want to go in as clean as possible. Keep an eye on CinemaBlend's MCU page for the all the latest from Earth's Mightiest Heroes and come back after you've seen the movie as we break down all the insanity.

See Will Ferrell And John C. Reilly Reunite In First Holmes & Watson Poster

See Will Ferrell And John C. Reilly Reunite In First Holmes & Watson Poster

It has been 10 years since Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly's hilarious team-up in 2008's Step Brothers, a film that remains loved and gut-busting to this day. Now the game is afoot and this comedic duo are once again teaming up for a comedy, but this time it will be not as step brothers, but as partners. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are starring in Holmes & Watson as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's legendary detective and his friend and confidante in what will obviously be a humorous take on the classic mysteries. Now have our first look at the two in the first poster for Holmes & Watson. Check it out:

I didn't know they threw up gang signs in Victorian era England, but there you have it. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly certainly look the part of the two friends and partners, rocking 19th century garb. Although I would have liked to have seen Will Ferrell's Sherlock Holmes wearing his deerstalker hat and smoking his classic pipe, but there is probably some rule against the latter. These two 'Holmies' look extremely confident, but something tells me Holmes' powers of logic and deduction might not be quite as astute as some of the other incarnations of the character. Just from this poster on Twitter you can tell how ridiculous this movie will be, and I fully expect that Holmes and Watson will hilariously bumble their way through whatever mystery they are solving.

That's really the exciting part about this movie: seeing the dynamic between these two actors and their characters. We've seen the magic that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly can make together in a buddy film before, and watching these two in a 19th century detective movie is a premise ripe for hilarity. I can't wait to see Sherlock Holmes condescendingly telling Watson 'it's elementary' while completely missing the mark on his deduction skills. This film should provide a different, funnier telling of the Baker Street resident than the Robert Downey Jr. films or the Benedict Cumberbatch TV series. Such is the benefit of public domain characters, lots of different interpretations. The debut of this poster hopefully that means that a teaser or trailer for Holmes & Watson isn't too far off.

In addition to Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in the title roles, Holmes & Watson boasts an impressive cast that includes Hugh Laurie as Mycroft, Ralph Fiennes as Professor Moriarty and Kelly Macdonald as Mrs. Hudson. Holmes & Watson is written and directed by Etan Cohen who most recently directed Will Ferrell in Get Hard.

UPDATE: The poster in question has since been removed. Fortunately, there should be plenty of trailers, posters and other fun bits released over the next few months that will come officially from the studio.

You can investigate Holmes & Watson when it hits theater screens on November 9th. Check out all the biggest movies still to come this year in our release calendar.

The True Story Behind This Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker 'Wrap' Photo

The True Story Behind This Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker 'Wrap' Photo

Since today is Star Wars Day, it seems fitting to gather round the cantina for the true story of that instantly iconic "wrap" photo from the set of Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker. Director J.J. Abrams shared the image on February 15, back when we had no idea what the title of the film would be. He announced that filming had wrapped on Episode IX, meaning filming had wrapped for the entire Skywalker Saga. Abrams posted an emotional group hug photo of new trilogy stars Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), and Oscar Isaac (Poe):

Turns out, though, that photo was not from when they wrapped filming. It was just a beautiful set photo taken from earlier in the shoot, and showed how much the stars appreciated each moment filming the final chapter in this saga.

The three stars in question explained the real situation behind the photo in interviews with Yahoo. Here's Daily Ridley's answer when asked about the "wrap" hug photo:

That wasn't when we wrapped, that's how much we love each other. The day of wrap we were in London, and John wrapped just before me. And I was a hot mess. 'Cause it's like, the character and everything, but the group of people I've been able to work with, I've been so lucky. I said to them this morning, Imagine if we didn't like each other?

Oscar Isaac expressed a similar sentiment on the non-wrap photo, and revealed that he was happy his character Poe got to spend more time with John Boyega's Finn in The Rise of Skywalker (something that has already been teased in the first trailer):

That was towards the end of filming in the desert, we still had a bit to go back in London. I just think that's an example of how close we got, and how much we genuinely love each other. For me, one of the great things about this film is I got to work so much more with John Boyega, and I just really love him deeply as a person. So I think that comes across. It will come across in the film.

Yeah, of out of everyone, Oscar Isaac seems the most emotional in the photo. It did leave fans reading into their expressions, trying to figure out what might've just happened before this shot. John Boyega talked about it just being an ordinary moment in extraordinary circumstances:

An ordinary moment just goes to show every day just felt emotional. I guess there was a sense throughout the whole film that this was the last one. So we'd hug each other after a long day when we struggled and we achieved a lot.

J.J. Abrams also talked a bit more about wrapping The Rise of Skywalker, comparing that last day to his last day filming Episode VII - The Force Awakens. As you can imagine, there was more emotion in finishing Episode IX, because everyone was very much aware that it was the final film in this story. It's the end of the nine-film Skywalker Saga. Not that Abrams has finished making the film -- as director, when filming is finished, he heads straight into post-production with editing and visual effects work.

Since the movie is ultimately called The Rise of Skywalker, that has led to a lot of speculation as well. Are there any Skywalkers in that photo above, which J.J. Abrams used to mark the end of filming? As far as we know, no, but there may be twists ahead. Luke Skywalker himself, played by Mark Hamill, is meant to return despite dying in The Last Jedi, and Emperor Palpatine appears to be rising as well, despite being killed in the original trilogy.

Prepare for plenty of surprises, and probably a lot of emotion, when Episode IX arrives in theaters December 20. Here's everything we know so far about Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
