Us Ending: What Happens And What It Means

Warning: Spoilers for Us are in play. If you haven't seen the film yet, you're going to want to bookmark this piece and come back after you've seen the film.

Everyone expected writer/director Jordan Peele's follow up to Get Out to be just as twisted, and just as deep, as his Academy Award-winning opus. But I don't think anyone would have expected just how hard Us decided to go when it comes to its end product. Like any good puzzle maker, Peele leaves a lot of clues and easter eggs throughout this film for the audience to put together. And the picture it reveals is something truly Biblical in scope.

Needless to say, if you haven't seen Us, you totally have to. Not only because it's a fantastic film that'll have you talking for days, but because what we're about to go into isn't going to make a lot of sense without that knowledge. So if you're planning on seeing the film, go do that now or whenever it's possible. Then come back, and dive into the deeper waters of the film's symbolism, as we're about to do now.

What Happens At The End Of UsBy time Us is ready to wrap up its narrative, we see Lupita Nyong'o's Adelaide, as well as her doppleganger Red (also Nyong'o), squaring off in an underground bunker. This confrontation comes after Red kidnaps Adelaide's son, Jason, and takes him into the bunker through an entrance in the maze that the two met at in 1986. Finding her way back underground, Adelaide is eventually given the entire story behind Red and the Tethered's existence.

As it turns out, the Tethered were an experiment in creating replicas of every human being in the surface world. An experiment that succeeded in physical copies, but as Red explains, fails in recapturing the souls of those copied. The project was eventually ditched, with the Tethered left to languish underground in their society of half-formed clones.

Eventually, this makes way for a sentiment of insurrection, with the Tethered world planning to surface and take their place in the sun. And leading the way is Red, the only clone with actual speech who's different from the rest. After this exposition is delivered, the two parties get into a fight, with Adelaide being the winner. Killing Red, she rescues Jason, and brings him back to the surface.

But as it turns out, Adelaide wasn't actually who she said she was. As it turns out, she was a Tethered who escaped, switching places with the real Adelaide back in 1986. So in actuality, Red was living Adelaide's life from that point forward, and vice versa. The only person that knows this besides her is Jason, who looks at his mother in horror before putting his mask back on. The film ends with a wide shot of the Tethered holding hands across America, with the news media covering the event through helicopter coverage. This is all pretty deep, but what does it mean exactly?

What It MeansUs feels like it's a film tackling that old socio-political saw best known as the Haves, and the Have Nots. In this case, everyone on the surface is a Have, while the Tethered are most definitely Have Nots. After decades of being confined underground, and being forced to live their lives unattended, uncared for, and impoverished, the Tethered are ready to mount an offensive and overthrow their surface-dwelling counterparts.

Now while we see a lot of the Tethered killing their surface-world counterparts, that doesn't look like it was their initial intent. We see beds made, with fresh jumpsuits and shoes in the underground bunker, so it feels like the initial plan would have been to simply supplant the surface world with their own numbers. But of course, there was resistance, it didn't work, and then the murders started.

Putting all of this together, Us is a story of revolt between the Haves and Have Nots, with the Have Nots trying to seize what they feel is rightfully there's. After being denied proper lives for so long, they hatch a plan to get into the mainstream and take over, all thanks to Adelaide being special, thus offering them a leader that could get the job done. If Red and Adelaide never switched, this may have never happened.

But looking deeper, Us also feels like a story of the political approaches and policies of the 1980s gone wrong; and their repercussions coming home to roost in the modern day. The entire story is one, big loop that spans from 1986 to the present day, with those created to be lesser than eventually taking over in one, apocalyptic gesture of dominance.

At the heart of it all though is a sentiment that any one of us is just a thin line away from being a Have or a Have Not. While we're all unique, it's the circumstances we're raised in that make us one or the other. Red was tired of being a person of the underground, so she switched places with Adelaide, and it wasn't too hard for her to fit in. As the film says through rather pointed, but understated dialogue, they're Americans. Looking through the hints scattered throughout Us, it's not hard to see this point being expertly sewn together throughout this slow burn narrative.

The CluesSifting through all the details that Jordan Peele slipped into Us, it's clear to see what's at work during the unfolding of the story. Even the detail that this film takes place between 1986 and 2019 is vital, as it's a 33 year story. Palindromes are a big symbol in the story that Peele is trying to tell, and there's a pretty huge one that recurs throughout: 11:11. In particular, there's a Bible verse that's attached to this numerical coincidence, Jeremiah 11:11, which says the following:

Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.

Now if that doesn't sound like a biblical reckoning, I don't know what does. The Tethered are that great evil, and judging by the gigantic red wall that's crossing the country, there is definitely no escape from them. But that's only the beginning, as the symbolism gets really political when you run back to the film's opening. A sequence where we're shown a TV spot for the Hands Across America initiative.

Meant to be a fundraiser to combat homelessness and hunger, the massive human chain of people holding hands raised money and awareness for those two causes that took up a lot of political real estate in the 80's. So much so that, as shown in another easter egg at the beginning of the film, they had already spawned a movie that spoke to the subject, with even more of a sci-fi/horror flavor.

Stashed right in frame, next to a copy of The Goonies, is a VHS of the cult classic C.H.U.D., a film that involved toxic waste storage mutating New York City's homeless population into cannibalistic humanoid underground dwellers. While the Tethered resurfacing in Us is more of a political statement, the creatures in C.H.U.D. were surfacing to feed on the surface world; but either way, the statement was that if we ignored the homeless problem long enough, it would come home to roost eventually.

Combining these clues gives you a story that, basically, tells us that if we keep ignoring our problems and disregarding our differences, they're going to come back to haunt us. And if we're not careful, that visitation will result in a reversal most foul. We can either be our greatest friends, or our worst enemies; and in the end, the decision is left to Us.

Could A Leak Have Revealed Episode IX's Title?

Could A Leak Have Revealed Episode IX's Title?

It's a great time to be a Star Wars fan, as there's a ton of exciting content coming down the pipeline. With Disney now in charge of Lucasfilm, plenty of new projects have arrived over the past few years, including both standalone films and main installments. It all started with J.J. Abrams' The Force Awakens, which reignited the narrative and brought new heroes together with franchise favorites like Leia and Han.

The current trilogy is wrapping up with Episode IX, with J.J. Abrams returning to the director's chair after Jurassic World's Colin Trevorrow departed the project due to creative differences with the studio. The film's contents are a complete mystery, as nothing besides the cast has been announced. This includes the movie's title, which still hasn't been revealed. At least, until now.

There have been plenty of fan theories floating around regarding Episode IX's mysterious title. But a new possible title has now hit Reddit, with the poster claiming that it's the real thing. That title? Star Wars: Son Of Darkness. Did anyone else just get chills?

This possible title comes to us from redditor TheGarrettThomas, who claims to have been told the title of Episode IX before the general public. While they don't cite who the original source was, the title is ominous enough to get serious attention from the Star Wars fandom. Son of Darkness is a title that can be applied to a variety of characters throughout the Star Wars franchise, making it an appropriate title to end the Skywalker Saga forever.

Of course, Star Wars: Son Of Darkness hasn't been confirmed by Disney or Lucasfilm, and it's more than possible that this is just another rumor that won't come to fruition. But with so little information currently known about Episode IX, the generations of Star Wars fans are eager for any and all information about J.J. Abrams' upcoming blockbuster. Including a title as bold as Son of Darkness.

Giving Episode IX the name Son of Darkness would be a bit of a departure from how Star Wars franchises usually function. The space opera's titles typically describe a major event in the franchise's canon. The Empire Strikes Back and Revenge of the Sith both describe the dark forces of the franchise rising up after an embarrassing defeat. Meanwhile, A New Hope and The Force Awakens tease a resistance against the all powerful forces controlling The Empire-- The Empire and The First Order.

In contrast, Star Wars: Son Of Darkness would seemingly describe one specific character-- most likely Adam Driver's Kylo Ren. Kylo's morality has been at the center of the current trilogy, so naming Episode IX after him would make a great deal of sense. That potential title bears a closer resemblance to Rian Johnson's The Last Jedi.

Before its release, there was a ton of theorizing about who might be the titular Last Jedi. Rey and Luke were both tossed around as possibilities, although the meaning of the title became clear when the film hit theaters. There was no Last Jedi, as Rey helped to inspire a new generation of Light Side heroes.

The title of Episode IX is just one of the many mysterious surrounding the upcoming Star Wars sequel. The pressure is on for J.J. Abrams to deliver a satisfying conclusion to not only the current trilogy, but the Skywalker Saga in general. The Star Wars franchise is one that has been passed down across the generations, so there's a massive group of fans looking to see how the the galaxy far, far away ends up.

While Son of Darkness seems like it is referencing the villainous Kylo Ren, its a title that could reference quite a few characters in the Star Wars franchise. The most literal interpretation of the title would be about be about Luke Skywalker, who is a son of the galaxy's most evil. Darth Vader is the big villain and mascot of the property, and Empire Strikes Back's twist revealed that he was the son of the Sith Lord.

There's also an argument to be made that Darth Vader himself was the son of darkness, considering his fate as one of the galaxy's most evil villains. Anakin Skywalker was born via immaculate conception, with Shmi lacking a partner and reason for becoming pregnant with the young villain. While he was prophesied to bring balance to The Force, he ultimately took the Jedi Order down, and murdered even the youngest of force sensitive figures in the galaxy.

Of course, it's more than possible that Episode IX won't actually be named Son of Darkness. We're still a year away from the blockbuster's release, so there's a long time to wait until Disney and Lucasfilm begin announcing updates about the upcoming Star Wars sequel. Rumors and fan theories for popular blockbusters are very common, so it's probably best we don't put too much stock in the potential title until it's officially announced.

Narratively, it seems like Episode IX could take the Star Wars franchise seemingly anywhere. While The Force Awakens was a traditional Star Wars flick similar to A New Hope, The Last Jedi took the property to brand new places. Director Rian Johnson crafted a blockbuster that was purposefully subversive, and went against everything fans were expecting with Episode VIII. As such, fans have no clue as to where the story will go next.

Luckily, J.J. Abrams returning to the director's chair allows him to complete the story he began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While Rian Johnson took the character Abrams created to new places with The Last Jedi, Episode IX will give him the reigns once again. As such, he can complete Rey, Poe, and Finn's stories in the way he originally planned. Whether or not this includes Abrams retconning certain plot twists like Rey's parentage remains to be seen.

It's currently unclear when the Star Wars franchise will finally reveal the title for Episode IX. Disney has been very selective about its titles recently, especially when it comes to major blockbusters like the Star Wars or Marvel Cinematic Universe. But if Star Wars: Son of Darkness ends up being the real title, perhaps Lucasfilm will make the reveal sooner rather than later.

All will be revealed when Episode IX arrives in theaters on December 20th, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year.

11 Great Movies Coming To Netflix In November 2018

November's incoming Netflix lineup is another example of just how fine the perks of membership can be. Out of the newcomers, there are some old favorites we can't wait to revisit on the streaming giant in the month ahead. If you want to see this past month's notables, we have you covered, but we're about to dive into the best of what November has to offer.

Bram Stoker's DraculaVampire movies aren't what they used to be. It's hard imagining anyone creating a lush, gothic portrait of bloodlust like Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, simply because it's a film that is both flashy and brooding. Starring Gary Oldman as the head bloodsucker in charge, the film further marked director Coppola's walk down the path of the auteur, and considering he was coming off of The Godfather Part III, this is quite the rebound. It's just a shame that we never got that Anthony Hopkins led spinoff about Van Helsing, as this underrated delight could have used some company.

Cape FearWhen a remake works, it's usually because either the folks behind the film knew how to honor the content, or they knew how to put their own spin on it. Cape Fear represents both of those halves, as director Martin Scorsese took the 1962 classic and turned it into a 1991 affair that still holds up. Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro are the men playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse, after a conviction that should have never happened turns into a gruge for the ages. You've probably seen the memes this film has inspired, but you might not be laughing after you've seen their source, as it's quite chilling.

Children of MenWith Alfonso Cuaron's Roma debuting on Netflix in December, it makes sense to bring some of the director's work onto the streaming platform's lineup as an appetizer. Though in terms of food portions, Children of Men is one of those appetizers that feels like a whole meal on its own. Still holding a pretty well-regarded spot in modern film history, Clive Owen's quest to protect the first mother in a post-apocalyptic world is a technical marvel to behold, with some long take sequences that are still talked about to this day. That is, after people stop wiping their tears from recalling some of the movie's extremely powerful moments.

Close Encounters of the Third KindIt's easy to look back at Close Encounters of the Third Kind with a post-modern eye, and pick apart some of the film's questionable choices. In particular, the behavior of Richard Dreyfuss' Roy throughout the film versus his responsibilities as a father stick out in pretty much every conversation that comes up surrounding Steven Spielberg's film. Yet, it's just as easy to focus on the wonder of first contact that the film also paints a compelling picture of. It seems like a good time to re-watch the film, and open that discussion up once more.

CloverfieldEarlier this year, Netflix released the latest film in the loosely bound Cloverfield series, The Cloverfield Paradox. Without spoiling it too much, there are some references that link the original film back into the third entry in the anthology. Which makes the first film's arrival into the Netflix pool all the more exciting, as those ties will be easier to identify through a double feature of the two films. Now all we need is 10 Cloverfield Lane added to the collection, and we'll be able to complete our flow chart of just how Howard Stambler's mutant worm theory works into the entire franchise.

Doctor StrangeDoctor Strange is one of the best Marvel Studios origin stories, period. It treads familiar ground while nailing a character that we'd come to know and love in a cinematic context, and it's a lot of damned fun to watch. But we're guessing that's not why Benedict Cumberbatch's MCU debut is back on Netflix. Rather, it may have something to do with the good doctor's role in Avengers: Infinity War, which has us thinking that this is an early stage primer to help folks refresh themselves before watching this summer's blockbuster all over again, in preparation for next year's Avengers 4. Just a hunch.

From Dusk Till DawnFolks, it's time for more vampires. Don't expect frilly dresses and polite English accents this time out though, as the creatures of From Dusk Till Dawn are rougher and tougher than what you may have seen in that other film. George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino are the infamous Gekko Brothers, who are just trying to make their way to safety after scoring a hell of a payday. Just when they thought that innocent looking strip club / bar was going to provide them safety, some twists turn their night of celebration into one hell of a time.

Good Will HuntingEvery time Good Will Hunting comes up in conversation, it raises the question of why Matt Damon and Ben Affleck haven't written another film together. This touching story of genius untapped, and turning around one's life before it's too late, was an Academy Award winner for Damon and Affleck's script, as well as for Robin Williams' Best Supporting Actor performance as the title character's therapist. More importantly, it's just that damned good of a movie, and it'd be nice to see the two friends reunite for a new writing project down the line. For now though, we'll just revel in this film's return to Netflix streaming.

Julie & JuliaBiopics are hard, as anyone whose seen a handful of them will tell you. Somehow, Julie & Julia not only manages to do a decent job of telling the Hollywood version of two separate women's stories, it's also one of the better food-centric movies that are out there. Splitting focus between Amy Adams' Julie Powell and Meryl Streep's Julia Childs, we learn more about each woman through their routines and their cuisine. The added bonus of Stanley Tucci playing Julia's husband, Paul, is the cherry on top of this feel-good movie.

National Lampoon's Animal HouseWhile it's too late to qualify as a "back to school" addition, it's never too late to enjoy National Lampoon's Animal House again! Delta House's antics have not only surprisingly aged well, but they also seem to get better as time passes, and that's saying a lot when it comes to the field of farcical comedy. The word classic applies to this film in every sense of the word, so feel free to pledge yourself to this fraternity of laughter once again.

Green RoomWe close out this month's festivities with director Jeremy Saulnier's Green Room, which arrives not to long after his latest film, Hold The Dark, wowed audiences on Netflix in the closing days of September. Through these two films, you can definitely identify a pattern of what type of story the director likes to tell, but this film might be the better example. Watching Anton Yelchin and his co-stars face off against Patrick Stewart and his goons makes for a terrific thriller, and if you haven't seen it yet, you really need to get onboard.

Hellboys Rotten Tomatoes Score Is Here, and Its Rough

Guillermo del Toro's two Hellboy films struggled at the box office, but both movies reviewed quite well when they were released. The box office prospects of the newly rebooted Hellboy have yet to be realized, but on the review side of things...it's not going well. Just hours before the first general audiences get a look at the new Hellboy, the movie sits with a Rotten Tomatoes score of an abysmal (demon joke) 12%.

Specifically, as of this writing, that number represents 60 total reviews, with only seven of them qualifying as positive. That's actually a fairly small number of reviews for a wide release film that's expected to be the biggest opener of the weekend. However, in many markets, press were not given screenings of the film prior to release, so a lot of critics simply haven't seen the film yet. Of course, when critics aren't given screenings, that's frequently a sign of something bad, and the reviews that have come out have clearly confirmed that.

Still, there are always movies that critics don't love, but 88% of critics disliking a movie is quite a feat. For comparison, that puts Hellboy a point below Tyler Perry's A Medea Family Funeral which scored a 13% positive score. It's bringing up the rear for this weekend's major releases. Laika's Missing Link is sitting at a healthy 89% while the comedy Little isn't fairing well, but with a 52% score it looks like an Oscar contender compared to Hellboy.

There was a time when we expected genre material based on comic books to not be great. It was frequently reviewed poorly whether or not it found an audience. However, these days we're much more used to seeing this sort of material actually turn out well. The reasons that Hellboy has crashed so hard with critics are as varied as the critics themselves. The CGI is bad. The story is a mess. The characters go nowhere. It's all sizzle and no steak. If you like over the top violence with a story that seemingly goes everywhere at once, then maybe this is the movie for you after all.

Of course, it remains to be seen if any of this actually matters. While audiences and critics tend to be in rough alignment more often than people realize, the fact is that the two sides can certainly diverge. Critics can love movies that audiences don't bother with, this happens frequently with "awards bait" movies in the last quarter of the year, and audiences can embrace movies that critics hate. In the end, it's the audience response that will determine whether Hellboy is truly a success, or if it becomes the beginning of the new franchise is obviously would like to be.

There will likely be an influx of additional reviews for Hellboy as more critics see the film over opening weekend, but there's certainly no reason to expect a massive change in the overall response. If the film was on the border between "Fresh" and "Rotten" a couple decent reviews might make the difference, but that's far from where this one finds itself.

Deadpool had a "certified fresh" 83% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes on Friday, while 95% of the audience has liked it as well. Here are some of the highlights from critics' reviews — and don
