Solo's Box Office Drop From Friday To Friday Was Really High

Solo: A Star Wars Story debuted last weekend, but its initial box office numbers weren't nearly as high as Disney and Lucasfilm, not to mention random box office estimators, expected last weekend. In its first weekend at the box office, the movie only made $101 million domestically, and that was over the 4-day Memorial Day weekend. Internationally, the movie fared even more poorly, and unfortunately, there's not good news related to the movie's first full week at the box office. This past Friday, Solo: A Star Wars Story only managed to pull in roughly $8.2 million at the box office, domestically. That's a 77.2% drop from the first Friday to its second Friday of release.

Usually when we talk about box office drops, we talk about from weekend to weekend. Generally, movies see a fairly significant drop between the first weekend at the box office and the second, although there have been exceptions. The Greatest Showman, for example, actually saw its box office grow during its second weekend in theaters late last year. A good drop in the second weekend might be the 45% drop that Wonder Woman saw in its second weekend. A 77% drop would be a steep drop for a whole weekend, but the final box office numbers for the whole weekend aren't being counted here. Right now, we're just noting that Solo: A Star Wars Story made 35.6 million during its first Friday and only made a little under $8.2 million during its second Friday. That's a very steep drop.

The only way to compare the 77% Friday to Friday drop would be with another Friday to Friday drop. Per Forbes, Solo actually fared slightly worse than Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Friday to Friday drop, percentage-wise, as TLJ came in at 76.5%. During its first Friday, the movie made $104.7 million at the box office. During its second Friday, the movie also dropped heavily, earning just $24.6 million at the box office. Obviously, those numbers in general are higher that Solo: A Star Wars Story; however, the percentage it dropped is similarly around 77%.

Whatever the full weekend total with Sunday included ends up being, it's clear that Solo: A Star Wars Story has not been the box office win Disney and Lucasfilm clearly anticipated. Due to directorial changes and reshoots, the Han Solo prequel film reportedly cost about $250 to make, and that's not even counting the money the studio spent on advertising. At this point, with both a lackluster domestic and worldwide intake, the real question is whether or not Solo: A Star Wars Story will go on to make money.

Reviews for the movie have been decent but not great, and I've already personally outlined why I think the movie is worth seeing. Regardless, after a few weeks where people flocked to the movies, that seems to be slowing down. Rampage: What You Need To Know About The Games Before The Movie

The long-heralded, just around the corner coming of the video game movie renaissance had two shots this year to finally get off the ground. The first shot came last month with the Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander. That film fared far better than most video game movies critically, but it still underwhelmed given the talent involved and failed to ignite the box office. The second video game movie comes this month in the form of Rampage starring Mr. Blockbuster, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Rampage is actually quite an interesting case of adaptation. If you look at video game properties that have been tapped for cinematic adaptation recently, they are titles that had a presence in the current zeitgeist. Tomb Raider was rebooted in 2013 and is receiving another entry later this year, Warcraft is always relevant and Assassin's Creed is a premier title almost annually. Rampage is uncommon in this regard, as it is not a current video game that enjoys a prominent position in today's gaming culture. It is for that reason that Rampage might be more poised for success than most video game adaptations. It is also the reason that a primer on the Rampage video game series is warranted.

I have to imagine that there is probably a sizable segment of the population that doesn't even know that this upcoming movie starring The Rock is based on a video game. Even those who do may be too young to have played the games or just aren't terribly familiar with them. So with that in mind, here is a rundown on everything you need to know about the Rampage video game franchise before seeing the movie.

HistoryThe Rampage video game franchise made its debut in 1986 as an arcade game from developer Bally Midway. Like many popular arcade games in that era, Rampage also made its way to a slew of home consoles and platforms, including the Sega Master System, the NES and several Atari systems. It was actually this original Rampage game that Dwayne Johnson played in arcades as a kid and that fandom inspired him to be a part of the feature film adaptation. The Rampage franchise took a decade-long hiatus until 1997 when Rampage World Tour returned the series to arcades as well as home consoles. Bucking naming conventions as the third game in the series is Rampage 2: Universal Tour, which arrived in 1999. This was followed up with Rampage Through Time in 2000, Rampage Puzzle Attack in 2001 and finally Rampage: Total Destruction in 2006.

The interesting thing about this film adaptation and the reason that it is kind of a unique choice is that the last game in the series was released over a decade ago. I think this actually works in the movie's favor as the games are not current and though they have their fans, this is not a beloved title where faithfulness and authenticity will elicit strong emotions. It is also cool in that it wasn't picked out for adaptation because it is of the moment or trendy. Hopefully that means that it is being adapted because there was a good idea about how to do so.

GameplayWith the exception of 2001's Rampage Puzzle Attack, the Rampage series has pretty much maintained the same basic formula over the decades. You get dropped off in some city, somewhere in the universe at some point in history, and you do what giant monsters do best... and its not infrastructure development. When in Rome, you destroy Rome. I sort of take it that as a giant thing, you can't stand the presence of other giant things like buildings that attempt to challenge your giantness. You can work alone or cooperatively with other players to gain points by leveling a city and fighting off the military that tries to stop you. You could replenish your health by eating humans and seeking out helpful items like food and money. But there were also items that can hurt you like bullets and toasters.

This silliness has to be referenced in the movie. If The Rock were to just throw a toaster at the giant wolf only for it to prove useless it would be a great nod to the original game. The monsters in the original game could work together, but they could also fight and it looks like we'll be getting a fair bit of that here as the monsters will be pitted against each other. George and The Rock look to be facing off with the other monsters and possibly the military to defend the city.

CharactersThe most memorable characters in all of the Rampage games are part of what's known as The Wrecking Crew. This group consists of George the giant ape, Lizzie the dinosaur/lizard and Ralph the wolf. In addition to having the most unthreatening names ever, you can see how these characters were references to King Kong, Godzilla and a giant werewolf. These aren't even the weirdest characters either. Over the years the Rampage video games introduced more and more giant monsters to make things interesting. They ranged from characters like Boris the rhinoceros and Ruby the lobster to Jackalopes and Yetis to demons and aliens. Needless to say, in a game with little story featuring fun giant monsters, the human characters weren't especially interesting but the movie looks to be making up in that department with Dwayne Johnson and Co.

I feel like the trailers for Rampage have shown us a good portion of the movie but I have to wonder if something is being held back. The crocodile taking on the role of Lizzie was glimpsed at first but has now been fully revealed so it would be cool if there is another monster being kept out of the marketing. While The Wrecking Crew are the main attraction I wouldn't be surprised if this film maybe included an Easter egg or post-credits scene teasing something fun like Curtis the giant rat.

The StoryIt probably goes without saying but the Rampage games are not Mass Effect. The story is pretty simplistic. In the games humans undergo mutations, becoming these giant animal-like monsters due to science experiments conducted by, wait for it... ScumLabs. Yes, fictional villainous organizations of the 1980's favored a certain forthrightness with their intentions (see: the Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem). The monsters then rampage around the world sometimes taking out their rage on ScumLabs facilities in the process. There are even instances where the monsters defend the planet from aliens. It is clear that the movie will have some dastardly organization conducting some kind of experiments called "Project Rampage", which Malin Ackerman's character can be seen talking about in the trailers. There's definitely a government presence too with Jeffrey Dean Morgan's smarmy Agent Russell or 'Negan in a suit' who seems to know something about what's going on.

The big difference in the movie is that whatever nefarious science experiments are being conducted, they are affecting animals and not people. I am curious if this is just the first step in a larger plot and what the end goal is. ScumLabs was reckless, stupid and greedy in the games, but the villains here look to have a more clear agenda. The nice thing about these games not having deep, complex plots is that it allows for a lot of flexibility on the part of this film to take the core conceit of giant animal-monsters and build around that with a story that works in the medium. Perhaps the bare bones story from the games is what will finally allow a film to break the video game movie curse.

Jordan was recently asked who he thought would win in a fight between Adonis Creed, his character in Creed and the forthcoming Creed II, and Erik Killmonger, the role he played in Black Panther. I'm gonna have to say Killmonger. Only because he's, like, trained in every style possible -- weapons, martial arts, boxing, this, that, the other. Adonis? He's scrappy, he's a fighter, but he needs to be in the ring. He needs these two hands.

In a straight-up fight, Erik Killmonger was able to take down T'Challa, so it's not too far of a stretch to believe that he could do the same thing with Adonis Creed. Killmonger worked for governments doing things that those governments didn't want to advertise, and in doing so he was trained in every imaginable fighting style and with every imaginable weapon so that he would be the most deadly force possible.

As tough as Adonis Creed is, it's difficult to imagine him standing much of a chance against that in a fight with no rules. Adonis certainly wouldn't go down easy, and if he was able to get his hands on Killmonger the guy wouldn't leave the fight without some damage, but it's unlikely Creed would ultimately prevail.

Of course, if Killmonger was forced to abide by actual rules to the fight, and the pair had a real boxing match between the ropes, things will likely go very differently. Chris Van Vliet followed up asking what would happen if the fight was an actual boxing match and Michael B. Jordan said...

I'll give it to Adonis. [But] a straight-up fight, Killmonger's gonna take it, for sure.

If Killmonger was limited in what he could actually do in a fight, he wouldn't be such an obvious winner. His strength comes in the fact that he can be versatile and fight in any number of different ways. Adonis Creed is probably the better boxer of the two, having spent his career focusing on that particular style of fighting, so if that was all the two could do, Killmonger would likely go down.

A Creed vs. Killmonger boxing match might look like the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor. Nobody would question McGregor's ability to fight, but when forced to play to the strengths of his opponent, it's a different story.

While Killmonger may ultimately be the victor in any fight between these two, luckily, Creed doesn't have to fight outside the ring. He'll have his two hands full, however, when Creed takes on the son of the man who killed his father in Creed II which will be hitting theaters next week.

Back in January, it was reported that This is Us star Ron Cephas Jones was in talks to play The Wizard in Shazam!, and for months it was assumed that he'd scored the role. However, earlier this week it was revealed that Jones had scheduling conflicts with the World's Mightiest Mortal's upcoming movie, and Djimon Honsou was tapped as Jones' replacement. Honsou was already a comic book movie veteran, having played Korath the Pursuer in Guardians of the Galaxy, but it turns out that the actor has also already shown up in the DC Extended Universe, as he'll be seen later this year as the Fisherman King in Aquaman.

While a character named Fisher King was introduced in the Aquaman book at the start of the Rebirth era as the former leader of N.E.M.O., it appears that Fisherman King is an original character created specifically for the Aquaman movie. You can head over to EW to get your first look at Djimon Honsou's character, who is a green, humanoid fish creature garbed in golden armor, carries a trident and rules over one of the seven kingdoms of Atlantis. In that scene, he is surrounded by the Fisherman Queen (Natalia Safran), Princess (Sophia Forrest) and a royal guard, and they are listening to Patrick Wilson's Orm, who has come to enlist Fisherman King's help in declaring war on the surface world. As executive Peter Safran explained:

After the fall of Atlantis, some of the kingdoms evolved and some devolved. This is one that evolved. This is a kingdom that's primarily artistic and cerebral, with poets and philosophers.

So for those keeping track at home, Djimon Honsou will appear in three comic book movies within the span of five months. First, he'll show up in Aquaman as Fisherman King this December, then he'll reprise Korath in Captain Marvel next March, and then a month after that, he'll play The Wizard in Shazam!, where he'll give the adolescent Billy Batson his amazing abilities. It's quite possible that having seen Honsou's performance in Aquaman, Peter Safran, who is also a producer on Shazam!, thought that he would be a good fit for The Wizard once Ron Cephas Jones had to depart. Interestingly enough, Honsou isn't the only Aquaman actor who has dual roles within the DCEU, as Patrick Wilson made a vocal cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as the President of the United States.

Set after the events of Justice League, Aquaman sees Jason Momoa's Arthur Curry returning to Atlantis to embrace his royal duties.
