The Grudge Reboot Is Being Held Up By The Original Japanese Producer

Reboot/remake fever is more contagious than ever in Hollywood right now, and the horror genre is no exception. Granted, there are plenty of original horror stories that have hit the big screen in recent years that have been critically and commercially well received, but every now and then word comes in about an existing franchise/property that's being brought back to look through in a new lens. One of these particular projects that's been in the works for a while is Grudge, which is a reboot of 2004's The Grudge and the second time the Japanese film Ju-on: The Grudge has been remade. Grudge is supposed to hit theaters next year, but Taka Ichise, the producer of Ju-on, has filed a lawsuit that may complicate that release plan.

As reported by Deadline, Taka Ichise has filed a breach of contract suit against Good Universe, the production company behind Grudge. Ichise's suit, which was filed at the Los Angeles Superior Court this past Tuesday, claims that Good Universe acquired the right to develop the next Grudge movie on the condition that Ichise, who was a producer on the previous Grudge trilogy, would be given a producer credits and paid an agreed-upon fee. However, Good Universe supposedly did not give Ichise his producer credit, hence why he's taking this issue to court. Good Universe produced Grudge alongside Ghost House Pictures and Stage 6.

Given Take Ichise's connection to the earlier Grudge movies, it makes sense why he want to be labeled as a producer on the upcoming reboot, so it's unclear what happened with Good Universe making good on that promise. given that Grudge is only two weeks away from its scheduled release date, obviously something will need to happen fast in order for that to still happen. The easiest way to accomplish that is for Good Universe to properly compensate Ichise or come to some other kind of out-of-court settlement. However, if this ends up going to court, then one would imagine that we'll have to wait even longer to see the Grudge reboot.

A fourth Grudge movie was announced back in 2011, but by 2014, it was revealed that rather than follow the original Grudge trilogy, it would be a reboot that introduces new characters, monsters and elements, while still retaining the same spirit as its predecessors. In July 2017, The Eyes of my Mothers' Nicolas Pesce was hired as director and to re-write the script that had been penned by Jeff Buhler. The story follows a woman who's rushing to save her son from a curse that was left behind in a vacant house in their neighborhood, and the cast includes Andrea Riseborough, Demian Bichir, John Cho, Lin Shaye, Jacki Weaver, Betty Gilpin, William Sadler and Frankie Faison.

Assuming that Taka Ichise's lawsuit doesn't pose as too much of an obstacle, Grudge will be released in theaters on August 16, 2019. As for what movies are hitting the silver screen late this year, check out our 2018 premiere guide for release date information.

The Men In Black Spinoff Is Bringing Back An Original Trilogy Character

Rather than reboot the Men in Black film series following 2012's Men in Black 3, Sony Pictures opted to keep the next movie in the franchise set in the same continuity, just like how Universal spun Jurassic World out of the Jurassic Park trilogy. So in the Men in Black spinoff, Agent J and K's exploits all happened in the past, but until today, only new characters had been announced for the upcoming movie. However, it's now being reported that at least one familiar face will be present, as Emma Thompson is reprising Agent O.

Agent O was introduced in Men in Black 3 as the new chief of the Men in Black organization following Agent Zed's (Rip Torn) passing. After the timeline was changed by Boris the Animal, O was able to deduce from Will Smith's Agent J, who was the only person who retained memories of the original timeline, that there were temporal shenanigans afoot, and she pointed him in the right direction on how to go back in time to fix everything. While in 1969, J also encountered O's younger self, who was played by Alice Eve. Since specific plot details for Men in Black spinoff are still being kept under wraps, THR didn't provide any information on how O will fit into the movie, but presumably she's still the head honcho at MIB. Well, stateside at least, as Liam Neeson is reportedly playing the leader of MIB's U.K. division.

Since Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' time with the Men in Black franchise appears to be over (though perhaps that will change someday), Agent O makes the most sense to bring back for this spinoff (though I'm still crossing my fingers that the worm guys return). Assuming she's still leading MIB, then she's the best connective thread between the original trilogy and this new adventure, similar to how Dr. Henry Wu was used in Jurassic World. Emma Thompson's recent cinematic credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Meyerowitz Stories and The Children Act, while her other upcoming appearances include Johnny English Strikes Again, The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle and Late Night.

Along with the previously mentioned actors, the Men in Black spinoff stars Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Kumail Nanjiani, Rafe Spall and Les Twins, a.k.a. Laurent and Larry Nicolas Bourgeois. The Fate of the Furious' F. Gary Gray is directing the spinoff, which is said to be more global in scale than its predecessors, and Iron Man duo Art Marcum and Matt Holloway penned the script.

James Gunn Will Reportedly Write And Direct Suicide Squad 2

Marvel's loss might end up being DC's gain. After James Gunn was unceremoniously fired from the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise due to old Tweets that, without question, were insensitive and out of line, many wondered what project Gunn would grab next. Would he stay at Marvel, just in a different franchise, or leap to a competitor? Now, the word is dropping that James Gunn is in talks to write Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros and DC, and is also being eyed to direct the property.

The Wrap, which broke the news, reports that James Gunn will have a new approach to the material, though it will still focus on a band of villains who are recruited by the government to carry out jobs that are too nasty for normal heroes in the DCEU.

Ben Affleck's Batman made a brief cameo in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, mainly because the original Squad focused on a new Joker (Jared Leto) and a live-action Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). It's unclear right now if Gunn's Suicide Squad 2 will have any connections to the previous movie, or to the larger DCEU.

This would be a spectacular save for a franchise that many would argue got off to a rough start. We'll never know 100% what happened on the first Suicide Squad, but the end result felt like "too many cooks in the kitchen," as cool elements were rolled out but there was a significant lack of flow to the overall feature. Assuming that James Gunn is given complete control, he could really make something of this band of misfits, these reject prisoners who rebel against authority... mainly because that's kind of what Gunn did with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The right way to do this is to give James Gunn the pieces that are in play. He'd have Will Smith and Margot Robbie as cornerstones, and a fantastic Amanda Waller in Viola Davis. Jared Leto isn't necessary (his interpretation of The Joker sure didn't work for me), but you could bring in new Squad members that are lifted from the pages of the comics. Suicide Squad 2 could be the launch pad for new heroes in the DCEU who wouldn't really get their own movie.

Imagine Green Arrow crossing paths with the Squad while they are on a covert mission for Waller? Or if they found out that the foe they were facing the whole time was Lex Luthor and Deathstroke, as introduced at the tail end of Justice League?

Basically, tone was an issue in Suicide Squad, and James Gunn could be the one to bring the right approach of music, humor and attitude to a Suicide Squad sequel. Now, Robbie might actually be out of this movie, as she moves on to Birds of Prey. And there's the rumor of a Harley/Joker movie, which might mean that Gunn gets to re-populate his team with all new, expendable DC villains.
