Who This Is Us' Sterling K. Brown Plays In Black Panther

The following contains spoilers for Black Panther. Feel free to come back after you've seen it.

Sterling K. Brown has a major role in one of the biggest shows on television in This is Us, but this weekend he debuts in what is guaranteed to be the biggest movie in months, Black Panther. Brown joins an all-star cast, but his role, unlike most of the others, was shrouded in mystery, as it was never revealed exactly who he was playing. Now that Black Panther is out, we understand why, because while the role isn't particularly large, it's pivotal to the plot and would have likely revealed story points that Marvel wanted to keep hidden. Read on to learn who N'Jobu really is.

We meet Sterling K. Brown's N'Jobu in the opening of the film. He's in Oakland, California in the early 1990s and he's busy planning something in an apartment that involves the use of a lot of big guns. There's a knock on the door, which turns out to be a couple of Dora Milaje, the female soldiers of Wakanda. Not only that, but they've brought the Black Panther, T'Challa's father T'Chaka, with them.

It turns out that Sterling K. Brown's character is Wakandan, not only that, but he's the brother of T'Chaka. Unfortunately, things are not going well between the brothers, as T'Chaka is there to accuse his brother of working with Ulysses Klaue to steal Vibranium from Wakanda. N'Jobu admits his guilt but argues it's necessary because the rest of the world needs Wakandan technology in order to fight oppression throughout the globe. T'Chaka won't hear it and orders his brother to return to Wakanda to stand trial.

From there the film jumps forward to the current day and follows on the events of Captain America: Civil War. T'Chaka has died and the movie doesn't reference these earlier events until much later. Later, when T'Challa does wonder what happened all those years ago, we get into the serious spoiler territory.

When T'Challa sees that Erik Killmonger has a ring that looks like his, he begins to investigate what truly happened to his uncle. We then see the moments that immediately followed the opening sequence, where N'Jobu pulls a gun on his brother, and the Black Panther strikes back and kills him. We then learn that Killmonger is actually N'Jobu's son who found his father's body and vowed revenge.

We see Sterling K. Brown one final time, after Killmonger drinks the fluid that provides the power of the Black Panther, he has a spiritual vision of his father and the two talk. Both clearly have some regrets about the path that life has taken.

The familial relationship between T'Challa and Killmonger in Black Panther isn't based in the comics, so it's understandable why Sterling K.Brown's character was being hidden, the truth could have revealed this major plot element.

How Melissa McCarthy Uses Wardrobe To Build Her Original Characters

Over the course of her career, Melissa McCarthy has showcased her wide array of comedic talents. The 47-year-old is equally skilled doing physical comedy, quick witty one-liners, and exploding in sudden hilarious bouts of rage. But it all has to start somewhere, and it turns out that the key to McCarthy getting into character and finding her voice for the film is in her wardrobe selection.

This was an aspect of the comedian's process that co-producer Steve Mallory explained to us during a visit to the set of Melissa McCarthy's latest comedy Life Of The Party back in 2016. Mallory has seen this first-hand for decades, having worked with McCarthy during her time at the Groundlings, as well as writing 2016's The Boss for the actress. After we asked Mallory just how important wardrobe and clothing is to Melissa McCarthy's character development, he broke down her methods.

Melissa has always done this. It is, 'A character comes from a wig. It comes from a sweatshirt.' She has a comprehensive knowledge of every second hand clothing store in Los Angeles. She can tell you, 'If you need to look '70s you're going to need to go to this mall.' And her look is so important, because she always has this North Star for what the character is. But she can't find the voice until she looks it. I'm not saying that she is one of those interior/exterior actors. Although she practices all the methods. But for her, her character has to begin almost seeing her in the mirror. She does love a wig. And that's a real Groundlings tradition. Someone actually put on a show called Wigprov. Once she gets it, it works.

It doesn't always come easily to Melissa McCarthy, though. In fact, Steve Mallory admitted that the actress started production on The Boss still not feeling comfortable about her character, Michelle Darnell. Only a slight adjustment on the first day of filming gave her the necessary boost. He told us:

I remember, on the first day that we filmed The Boss she came up to me and said, 'I don't know if I have her voice yet. I don't know what it is yet.' And she went and kind of just adjusted the look a little bit and she was like, 'Oh! There it is.' She's so into it, too. She has a hand in the costumes for everyone, because that's her process. Which is really fantastic. She has to be involved and integrated into it, she doesn't blithely go into any character or project.

In Life Of The Party, Melissa McCarthy's Deanna is suddenly dumped by her husband Dan (Matt Walsh) on the morning they drop their daughter Maddie (Molly Gordon) off at college. A longtime dedicated housewife, Deanna finds herself at a crossroads, so decides to go back to college herself, only to land in the same school and class as Maddie, who is understandably mortified.

Marvel Just Made A Huge Change To Captain Marvel, Probably to Fit The New Movie

Changes in the comics don't always reflect what's happening on the big screen for major superhero movies. For instance, a female Thor in your weekly issue of the Asgardian comic doesn't mean that Chris Hemsworth's being recast any time soon. However, a new change to Captain Marvel in the latest Marvel issues does seem to reflect something we bet they're setting up for the Captain Marvel movie.

Brie Larson is poised to begin playing Carol Danvers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe next year. (Her movie, Captain Marvel, drop March 8, 2019.) And new issues of a Captain Marvel run of comics, The Life of Captain Marvel, is making drastic changes to the character's classic origin... and if we had to project forward, we can basically see how it would fit into the narrative of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's origin movie.

Carol traditionally receives her powers when she encounters a Kree device that explodes, "blessing" her with the powers of Captain Marvel. In the comics, Carol is trying to get close to Dr. Walter Lawson, the human alias of the Kree hero Captain Marvel, or Mar-Vell. The Life of Captain Marvel's latest issue, according to io9, introduces a new Mar-Vell, though... and it's Carol's mother.

Wait, what?

According to this tweaked origin, Carol's Kree exposure thanks to the blast was not an accident. Instead, it awakened something that was in her already, passed down from her mother, who was the original Mar-Vell (well, actually, Mari-Ell). This makes Carol Car-Ell. And it lends more of a birthright to her powers, strengthening an emotional tie to her origin story.

Carol's mom is a Kree. Carol is a half-human, half-Kree from birth. The explosion from the Kree device triggered something that already was inside of her. The origin has been shifted, and it's major.

How might this spin forward into the Captain Marvel movie? This is ALL speculation, but bear with me as I try to connect a few dots. Marvel Studios has said that when the movie starts, Carol will already be Captain Marvel, and when she lands on Earth, she'll begin to remember her past, but vaguely.

We know that Jude Law plays the combo role of Mar-Vell and Walter Lawson in the upcoming movie, and he will be mentoring Carol in how to be a devout Kree warrior.

But there's a role that has NOT been confirmed in the movie, and it's for a major Hollywood icon. Who is Annette Bening playing in Captain Marvel? Could it be Carol's mom... the original Captain Marvel? Trades, at the time of Bening's casting, made that connection already, though nothing has been confirmed. Now that Marvel Comics is elevating the status of Carol's mother to superhero status, it makes more sense that you would be casting this four-time Academy Award nominee. Why cast Bening if it's for a meaningless supporting part?

What do you guys think? Are the Marvel Comics altering Carol Danvers' origin to fit what the movie is about to do? Will Brie Larson's version of the character be born from a Kree mother, and will that Kree mom be played by Annette Bening? It makes too much sense to us not to be true.

I can't see how Red Skull wouldn't return. He's the Joker to Cap's Batman, if you get my drift. To phase him out in one film would be a HUGE mistake IMO. There a ton of ways that he could be written back into the MCU.
