The DC And Marvel Villains that Nicolas Cage Would Play

Nicolas Cage knows his way around a superhero role. After all, between turns in films like Ghost Rider and Kick-Ass, he showed that he could pull off plenty of badass maneuvers as a caped protagonist. That said, some fans continue to wonder what he would be like as a supervillain, and it looks like the idea has not gone unnoticed by Cage himself. In fact, when asked to point out some comic book characters that he would be attracted to, Cage admitted in a recent interview that he would be interested in portraying The Joker or Doctor Doom if the opportunities to do so arose. Cage explained:

I mean, I think my comic book days are kind of... I'm on to other things, but I always thought I'd make a great Joker and I always thought that I would've been a good villain in one of the Marvel [movies] like Doctor Doom. But, Doctor Doom you have to wear that mask, but I thought the story leading up to Doctor Doom could've been interesting. At this point if I was to go back into the format it would probably have to be as a villain.

Talk about a Sophie's choice. Nicolas Cage has an inherent ability to bring a manic insanity to his roles that I think would make him a good choice for a unique new take on The Joker. Moreover, he also can imbue his characters with a quiet vulnerability that underscores their darkness -- which could make him a similarly good choice to play a pre-mask Doctor Doom in a potential Fantastic Four reboot focusing on his origin story. That's just my take, though.

As far as opportunity goes, although he's just chatting possibilities in his conversation with JoBlo, there's still time for Nicolas Cage to get his hands on one of these roles. For The Joker, DC is currently in the process of developing an origin movie showing how he turned into a grinning maniac; Joaquin Phoenix is circling the project, but he has not confirmed his status as the new Joker, and there could be room for someone like Cage to move in. On the Doctor Doom side of things, there's currently a Doctor Doom movie in development, with many fans also assuming that the character could enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe at some point as the Disney-Fox merger finalizes.

Despite our enthusiasm to potentially see Nicolas Cage make good on his comments and appear as The Joker or Doctor Doom at some point, we also need to temper these remarks with a healthy dose of skepticism. Even by his own admission, Cage seems "on to other things" at this stage of his career, so it's hard to determine if he will even find himself up for either of these roles. Having said that, speaking in purely hypothetical terms, the idea of him playing Doom or Mr. J seems like a genuinely intriguing prospect. If nothing else, Cage probably has a better chance of getting cast as The Joker than The Room's Tommy Wiseau, who has also lobbied for the role in recent days.

A few weeks ago, the upcoming Jessica Chastain-led action movie Eve found itself in a bit of hot water. While Australian director Matthew Newton was attached to take the helm, many complained about his personal history, specifically a 2007 incident that saw him plead guilty to assaulting his then-girlfriend. Response led Newton to leave his job, but now news has come down the wire that a replacement has been found.

Tate Taylor, who previously worked with Jessica Chastain on the Oscar-winning 2011 film The Help, has now come aboard to direct Eve as his first action movie. To date the filmmaker's work has been more in of straight comedy (Pretty Ugly People) or drama (The Help, Get On Up, The Girl On The Train) variety, but this will give him an opportunity to show what he can do with a different style of shooting.

Presumably still working with the original script written by Matthew Newton, Eve will star Jessica Chastain as the titular heroin - a talented female assassin - but not much else is known about the movie's plot. Not only that, though, Chastain is also working behind the scenes as well, and is producing the feature through her personal banner, Freckle Films.

What's unclear is exactly when the movie is going to really start moving forward. Jessica Chastain is currently a touch busy reuniting with another previous collaborator, Andres Muschietti, on IT: Chapter Two, which should keep her busy for a while. Meanwhile, Tate Taylor has his on material brewing as well, as he is currently in post-production on Ma, a Blumhouse horror movie starring Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Missi Pyle, Juliette Lewis, and Octavia Spencer. Eve isn't even the only film that Chastain and Taylor are developing together, as the trade report adds that they are collaborating on The Eyes of Tammy Faye - a film that is presumably based on the documentary of the same name about Tammy Faye Messner a.k.a. Tammy Faye Bakker.

Thanks to this movie's mysterious timeline, we're not sure exactly when we'll be able to see the finished product right now, but at the very least we will see a new action movie starring Jessica Chastain in the coming months. Though the real name of her character has yet to be revealed, she is set to play the central villain in Simon Kinberg's upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix which was originally scheduled to be released in November, but is now going to come out on Valentine's Day in 2019. Hopefully it will provide a nice ass-kicking preview that will give us a sense of what to expect from the action potential in Eve.

Why Macauley Culkin Doesn't Watch Home Alone Anymore

As far as comedies from the early 1990s go, Home Alone ranks as one of the more prominent. Whether you enjoy its wacky shenanigans first and foremost or simply have it as part of your annual Christmas movie rotation, nearly 30 years after it hit theaters, Home Alone is still considered a classic. But some actors aren't interested in watching the projects they've acted in, and we can count Macauley Culkin among that bunch. Despite being most famous for playing Kevin McAllister in the first two Home Alone movies, Culkin admitted that he doesn't watch them anymore, mainly because of how fresh his memories of those experiences still are. When asked how much of filming those movies he remembers, Culkin responded:

I don't really watch them all that often. We did like a 15-year anniversary DVD commentary and I realized I hadn't seen it in like 15 years. Whereas Chris Columbus, he watched it the night before, like a responsible human being.

While it probably would have been wise for Macauley Culkin to watch Home Alone to prepare for that commentary, besides that, I don't blame him for not having checked out the movie recently. Besides Culkin having lived through the production, many people on the street who recognize him probably bring up Home Alone as quickly as possible. The actor presumably likes having as much distance as possible from that time of his life. Nevertheless, Culkin can't escape Home Alone entirely during the holiday season. He continued:

It's kind of just, it's background radiation at Christmastime. I've had people who want to sit down and watch it with me, which is like both flattering and creepy. When I'm watching it, I'm seeing like, remembering like that day on set. Like how I was hiding my Pepsi behind the couch or something like that. I can't watch it the same way other people do.

So if Macauley Culkin catches even a snippet of Home Alone, he can instantly recall what he'd been up to on the day that particular scene was shot. Impressive. That said, as Culkin also mentioned during his recent appearance on Ellen, because Home Alone is shown so much in the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas, he tends to stay in more often so that people don't crowd him. Caulkin stated:

It's Macauley season. I try to go out less and less that time of year.

Although Home Alone was followed by Home Alone 2: Lost in New York two years later (another movie you'll find frequently running during the Christmas season, usually on Freeform), that was the last movie to star Macauley Culkin and the original cast. 2002's Home Alone 4 did reunite viewers with Kevin McAllister, his family and one of the original robbers, they were all played by different actors, while 1995's Home Alone 3 and 2012's Home Alone: The Holiday Heist both followed a brand-new lineup of characters. As far as Culkin is concerned, he doesn't appear to have any interest in watching either of his two Home Alone movies, but at least other folks can still enjoy these wacky tales to their heart's content, at Christmastime or otherwise.
