This Rotten Week: Predicting The Kid Who Would Be King And Serenity Reviews

We have two movies on tap this week, with a kid-centric return to Camelot, and a psychological thriller in which Matthew McConaughey gets to go into an intense brooding mode. Get ready for The Kid Who Would Be King and Serenity.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

Judging a book by its cover, the premise of The Kid Who Would Be King is so silly that under normal circumstances there is little chance that I would anticipate a positive critical response. It's a story about a modern day kid finding Excalibur and leading fight against the evil Morgana and all sorts of baddies and evil things. There are more ways for this to go wrong than right.

Then again, the trailer had some highlights, with a few laughs here and there, and then you see Joe Cornish's name attached and all of a sudden we've got something cooking. Cornish helmed the immensely enjoyable Attack The Block (90%) while also helping to pen Ant-Man (82%) and The Adventures of Tintin (74%). It sure looks like he brought his skills to The Kid Who Would Be King, which has come out of the gate hot with critics. It's sitting at 89% with 28 reviews posted, and many writers are using words like "charming," "likable," and "refreshing". Thankfully early reviews will save my prediction because there's no way I'd have gone this high without them.

If movies have taught us anything, it's that when you want to get off the grid, the best thing to do is move to a remote-ish coastal town populated by a lot of other really good-looking people. I feel like I've seen some approximation of this scenario time and time again, and in Serenity we have Matthew McConaughey as a troubled soul whose ex-wife tracks down to kill her new husband.

The film trailer delivers some suspenseful moments, and the whole thing definitely has the feel of a flick that will keep you guessing. These can work out well with critics, though you do have to toe the line between creepy/intense and off-the-rails confusing. I suspect director Steven Knight mostly makes Serenity work, and it helps that the cast is superb - featuring Anne Hathaway, Djimon Hounsou, Diane Lane and Jason Clarke in the supporting cast. Still, there appears that there be enough confusing double-crossing that I wouldn't be surprised if some critics are turned off.

There was only one movie on the docket last week, and I was on target with my prediction. Admittedly the critics gave me a head start on Glass (Predicted: 33% Actual: 35%), with the early reviews trending negative. Things didn't improve much over the course of the week, and we are once again left wondering whether or not M. Night Shyamalan is actually a good filmmaker or not. After a run of stinkers, he bounced back with Split (76%) and The Visit (66%), but has now once again taken a dive off the critical cliff. It isn't a good look for the guy who's already so polarizing.

We'll be back next time around with Miss Bala. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

This Rotten Week: Predicting A Dogs Way Home, Replicas And The Upside Reviews

If you like dogs, cloning, and/or buddy comedies, then this is the kind of week for you. While none of the movies look all that good, the themes on hand will probably appeal to at least some moviegoers. Get ready for A Dog's Way Home, Replicas, and The Upside.

Just remember, I'm not reviewing these movies, but rather predicting where they'll end up on the Tomatometer. Let's take a look at This Rotten Week has to offer.

I suppose if you like dogs or are five years old (or both) then A Dog's Way Home is right up your alley. Anyone else? Woof, I don't know. Plenty of good dog-voiceover movies have been made in the past, but this sure doesn't look like one of them. It looks as sappy and contrived as it gets. An extra good dude loses his extra amazing dog because of a complicated set of circumstances, and we must now root for the canine until he eventually finds his way home for a tearful reunion.

Director Charles Martin Smith has some experience with uplifting animal flicks, having helmed A Dolphin's Tale and its sequel (81% and 65% respectively). A Dog's Way Home seems to touch on a lot of the same notes, though I don't think it finishes as well with the critics. There just doesn't seem to be enough meat on this bone.

You know you are in a futuristic movie when the scientist/protagonist uses those computer monitors that project all around a person's face rather than a good old-fashioned keyboard and dual monitor set up. If they've got that rig, you are either dealing with Tony Stark turning his Iron Man suit into all kinds of awesome or Keanu Reeves reincarnating his dead family through the power of cloning. In this case, it's the latter, as audiences prepare for Replicas.

Frankly, this thing looks rather ridiculous. It looks like it wants to make some point about cloning while also throwing in some government intrigue and Reeves signature scowling and brooding. But I can't imagine its anything close to good based on the marketing. The trailer for Replicas has this sense of "trying too hard," and I bet the critics see it the same way.

The Upside looks like it is a paint-by-numbers dramedy about two unlikely guys, a billionaire quadriplegic and a recently released felon, who strike up a friendship after the former hires the latter to take care of him. It seems like just the kind of flick a movie studio would love while the rest of the world finds it almost completely implausible (and yes, I get it's based on a true story). Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston star as the "odd" pairing and I suppose the goal is to offer some laughs while pulling on the old heartstrings. Critics are meh on the film so far with it sitting at 55% through 11 reviews, and I don't see the score changing that much over the course of the week.

Director Neil Burger's track record has been hit or miss up until this point with Limitless (69%), Divergent (42%), The Lucky One (37%), and The Illusionist (73%). I suspect this latest lands more toward the negative side once things are all said and done.

We only had one movie last time around, and it was a miss for the Rotten Watch. Escape Room (Predicted: 34% Actual: 53%) didn't come within range of my prediction thanks to some critics enjoying the film a bit more than I thought they would. No one seemed to think it was all that good, but some were more forgiving about the premise and writing than others. It led to a few more positive reviews for a movie about a bunch of hip, young folk doing the hip young thing young people do, except this escape room has life or death consequences. It's silly, but the majority of critics saw it that way and trended just on the right side of positive.

We'll be back next time around with Glass. It's gonna be a Rotten Week!

The Upside is certainly formula and it goes without saying any seasoned movie-goer will know to expect every beat this hits, but that doesn't mean it's neither appealing nor endearing as it

And finally, Replicas (Predicted: 28% Actual: 9%) sucked, but way harder than I thought it would. Much like A Dog's Way Home, most critics didn't even get to screenings, as Rotten Tomatoes only has 22 reviews on record. In some ways that's even more an indictment on how bad this thing is.

Does Thor: Ragnaroks Taika Waititi Have Another Marvel Project Coming?

Does Thor: Ragnaroks Taika Waititi Have Another Marvel Project Coming?

Despite producing tons of successful blockbusters over the past year, the Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a surprisingly uneasy state. The studio hasn't revealed its plans for the shared universe after Avengers 4, with the only exception being Spider-Man: Far From Home, currently in the middle of filming. The following release was supposed to be Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, although the firing of James Gunn last month has left that franchise in jeopardy. Some Marvel fans are hoping that Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi takes on the project, as his sense of humor is the closest to Gunn's. Now it seems that Waititi might be taking on another project for Marvel, but what could it be?

This latest report comes to us from THR, where it was revealed that Marvel Studios has officially delayed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While not surprising, this put the future of the motley crew's adventures on indefinite hold, and it's unclear if the threequel will happen at all. Later in that story, it was revealed that Taika Waititi was reportedly meeting with Marvel, although neither party is willing to admit what the potential movie could be. So is it Guardians 3, Thor 4, or a new movie/TV show altogether?

Thor: Ragnarok was a game changer for the God of Thunder, as his first two movies aren't considered some of the MCU's best work. Waititi brought his signature sense of humor to Ragnarok, taking Thor into space, and pairing him with Hulk, Loki and newcomers like Valkyrie and Korg. The director actually voiced and did mo-cap for the latter character, giving him even more of an influence over the greater MCU. When Ragnarok hit theaters, fans immediately began campaigning for a fourth movie, hopefully with Waititi returning to the director's seat. But since Chris Hemsworth's contract is up with Avengers 4, it's unclear if Thor Odinson will be back after the final battle against Thanos.

Given Marvel's recent announcement regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it would also stand to reason that Taika Waititi could be taking a meeting about helming the upcoming threequel. If the studio wants to remain even remotely near their planned release date, the House of Mouse will have to get to work, and bring the Guardians together quickly. But that might be easier said than done.

The Guardians of the Galaxy cast are contracted for one more movie, but James Gunn's departure might change this. Following the cast's message of support for their director, actor Dave Bautista has continued staunchly defended Gunn. He even previously Tweeted he wouldn't return for the threequel if James Gunn's draft of the script wasn't used. We'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

The Guardians of the Galaxy (or what's left of them) will return to the MCU in Avengers 4. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

The one thing a spoiler is good at is not stalling when you get a bit sideways - like a G35 wants to. If you run a wing, go with more area and less angle of attack (6* instead of the peak at 12*).
