Queen Had A Say In Who Bohemian Rhapsody Cast As Freddie Mercury

Some talents who are successful enough to reach icon status might find themselves watching on the sidelines as Hollywood tells their story for the silver screen. That wasn't the case for the remaining band members of Queen, as they were part of the creative process for the upcoming biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, starring Rami Malek as their stunning lead singer, Freddie Mercury. The film will take audiences through the journey of the band, leading up to their legendary appearance at Live Aid in 1985. On Rami Malek's latest appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he was asked how involved the band had a hand in casting him as Mercury and themselves to which he said,

Very much so. And all of the cast. [Brian] had a say in, of course, who played him as well.

What an honor for the actors of Bohemian Rhapsody to be picked with the help of the British rock band. Apart from Rami Malek taking on the late-great Freddie Mercury, the rest of the members would be meeting the icons they play. 2017's Jamestown television series actor Gwilym Lee as lead guitarist Brian May, Ben Hardy from X-Men: Apocalypse as drummer Roger Taylor and Jurassic Park's Joseph Mazzello as bassist John Deacon. While Malek has already gained past acclaim for his Emmy-winning performance on Mr. Robot, the rest of the band members' actors aren't nearly as well known.

During Rami Malek's interview on Jimmy Kimmel, he explained that their first five days on set dove right into it, as the actors shot the Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium as Queen in front of an audience and also in front of Queen. Talk about an intimidating first day at work. Malek called it terrifying and said:

They are there. They were there from the beginning... They were there constantly, and I appreciated it.

Rami Malek especially appreciated it because it allowed him to play a little prank on Ben Hardy on set, as he convinced some of the crew members to tell the actor that Queen drummer Roger Taylor had one request: for Hardy to complete the extremely complex drum solo in the song "Keep Yourself Alive." On the call sheet, the plan was to only play the first verse and skip over it. As a result, Hardy didn't leave his trailer for a while, likely in a panic, but Malek did finally let him in on the joke.

Bohemian Rhapsody has faced some controversy during production, as director Bryan Singer was fired for reportedly being frequently absent on set, and Dexter Fletcher stepped in as his replacement, although it's also been said that Singer was tending to an ill parent. Singer will get directing credit for the potential Oscar contender despite his firing. We will have a clearer picture of how well the Queen biopic came together when the title is released in theaters on November 2. Although with the approval of the actual band during the process, it looks like a promising depiction of their story.

Mamma Mia 2 Just Pushed Universal To An Impressive Box Office Mark

A decade removed from its hugely successful predecessor, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again debuted last weekend to the respectable tune of $34.4 million. That performance was in line with projections and the sequel is expected to continue bringing in audiences at the box office in the weeks to come. Beyond just success in its own right, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has given Universal something to else to sing about. Mamma Mia 2's opening weekend has pushed the studio past the $1 billion mark at the domestic box office for the year.

This is the eighth consecutive time that Universal has passed $1 billion at the domestic box office. Universal enters the three-comma club second in 2018, joining first place studio Disney. According to Deadline, the Mouse House is lapping the field on the year, currently sitting at $2.55 billion at the domestic box office. While Disney's powerful blockbusters from the Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar brands have propelled it into the stratosphere, Universal crossed the billion dollar mark with a wide variety of titles. Last weekend's box office speaks to this with four very different Universal titles in the top 10, including the aforementioned musical Mamma Mia 2, Blumhouse's action horror film The First Purge, the blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Dwayne Johnson's original action movie Skyscraper.

The T-Rex in the room for Universal this year has been Fallen Kingdom, which is on its way to $400 million domestically. The sequel in the massive franchise is also in the billion-dollar club in its own right, having crossed $1 billion worldwide earlier this year. Behind Fallen Kingdom is another title that, like Mamma Mia 2, brought in female audiences, and that's Fifty Shades Freed. Although the closing chapter in that franchise suffered diminishing returns from its predecessors, it still netted Universal $100.4 million at the domestic box office. Some other notable titles that helped Universal to the $1 billion mark on the year are the horror flick Insidious: The Last Key, Pacific Rim Uprising and the R-rated comedy Blockers.

Although Disney is way ahead of the pack right now, it is cool to see the way Universal has also crossed $1 billion mark at the domestic box office on the year with still several months to go. A barrage of blockbusters and IP's aren't the only way to succeed. Universal's offerings may not be as flashy, but they are still getting the job done by providing something different and catering to underserved audiences.

On the horizon for Universal are a number of eclectic titles, including The House With a Clock in Its Walls, Halloween and Mortal Engines. Jason Momoa Wants His Aquaman To Be A Blue Collar Hero

While Aquaman has been a part of pop culture since his creation in 1941, the upcoming Aquaman movie offers a major opportunity for reinvention. We've already gotten a taste of what Jason Momoa is bringing to the character courtesy of Justice League, but his solo adventure will be a chance for the DC Extended Universe to dig much deeper. So what does Jason Momoa want people to see from the hero in James Wan's movie? In his own words, he wants him to be perceived as blue collar:

I think I wanted to make [the guy you can have a beer with]; I think that's why they kind of hired me to play the role. I mean, he's serious, but he's just jaded. He's just seen so much, and he doesn't really trust anyone. I think it's all about building the trust, and that's the whole Justice League thing - just being the team. You can't sit down and have a beer with Superman, you know what I mean? You can't. I wanted Aquaman definitely to be that guy - that he's blue collar. I mean the whole thing about him, I wanted him blue collar: he's raised with his dad, worked on bikes, worked on old cars with his father, and at a certain age he's given this gift. He doesn't know how to deal with it.

While primarily set after the events of Justice League, Aquaman will dive into the character's origins and unveil his unique background, and it seems it will be this exposure to his roots that will reveal him as the blue collar hero Jason Momoa wants you to see. This comes from a roundtable interview I did last summer on the set of Aquaman, which I had the chance to visit along with a small group of other film journalists. We had a good amount of time to sit down with Momoa to discuss his vision for Arthur Curry, and a bit part of it for him is recognizing the character's humanity in addition to his power.

Continuing, Jason Momoa further explained how that that divide between two worlds advances the character and makes him a deeper individual. He is in the unfortunate position of being a part of two very different worlds, and that in a way makes him a part of no worlds. He has his prejudices on both sides, but it's also his relationship to both that Momoa believes will make him a just king when he gets to that point. Said the actor,

His dad doesn't want him in the water, cause he doesn't want him taken away. The only thing he does know is that his mother was killed. He wants nothing to do with these people. Fucking hates 'em. And, I wanted to see what kinds of jobs he did when he left his dad's house, working on big oil rigs. He can go underneath, and he saved people and he hasn't saved people. And the side he can't cope with is his human side. That's what makes him great. That's what's gonna make him a great king, is his humanity.

Jason Momoa clearly sees Arthur Curry as individualistic but driven by a strong morality, and is working to make him an everyman in that way. In contrast, though, the same can't really be said for Black Manta -- the legendary DC Comics villain who will be adapted in live-action for the first time in Aquaman, played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. During our time with the actor, he was asked what he would say to his character if he were to see him in a bar, and he had a very comical response:

I wouldn't sit next to that motherfucker! I would not... You don't give that man advice; he's not going to take it! Thank you so much! I tried to give you something back for that as an answer, but I'm like, 'No, no, I'm not going to sit next to him!'

These are some enlightening takes on important characters, and we are now just a few months from seeing them up on the big screen. Aquaman will be bringing its eponymous hero and Black Manta to theaters this December, specifically on December 21st. With a supporting cast that also includes Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Ludi Lin, Temuera Morrison, and Nicole Kidman, we are definitely excited -- and will have more for you from my time on set soon.
